Influences and Inspirations • In October 1945 his father and nephew were killed • This is where is art style became more realistic and emotional • He referred to these deaths as a “formative emotional event in his artistic career”
Influences and Inspirations continued… • Neighbor Christina Olson was an inspiration • Christina had an illness where she could not walk • She spent most of her time on property around her house • Wyeth made a painting of her on a field facing her house in the distance
Influences and Inspirations continued… • Neighbors Anna and Karl Kuerner were inspirations -Began painting them in 1948 -The Kuerner’s farm was one of his most important subjects for almost 30 years -Wyeth States about the farm “I didn’t think it a picturesque place. It just excited me, purely abstractly and purely emotionally.”
Influences and Inspirations continued… • Both farms are open to the public to tour through museums • In 1958, Wyeth and his wife bought “The Mill” • “The Mill” is a group of 18th century buildings • These were included in many of his works including “Night Sleeper”
Movement, style • Visual artist/realist painter • Like to use land and people in his art • Focused on emotions of people or symbolic objects • Primarily used watercolors
Success, Achievements, and Awards • In 1937-age 20: first one-main exhibition of watercolors -located in the Macbeth Gallery in New York City • In 1967 he made an appearance in the Whitney Museum of American Art -this broke the museum's attendance record • He was the first honorary member of the Soviet Academy of the Arts in 1978
