OBJECTIVE • To allow you the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired throughout your different courses to problems that have human, legal and business dimensions.
Why get certified? • Certification demonstrates you master all areas of HR. • Acts as a sort of Litmus Test • Certification sets you apart as a true HR professional. • It demonstrates that you have the knowledge and skills that are vital to HR management. • You will also gain national recognition.
How do you go about becoming certified? • Everything you need to know about certification can be found at www.hrci.org. • To my understanding, there is a SHRM chapter in Jamaica • If not, you can still access the website and gather the information regarding the cerificate
Exams Overview: • There are 3 different exams: PHR, SPHR and the GPHR. • The PHR and the SPHR exam have 225 m/c questions (200 scored questions. 25 pre-test) • The GPHR exam has 165 m/c questions (150 scored and 15 pre-test questions) • 4 hours to complete the PHR and SPHR exam and 3 hours to complete the GPHR exam.
Exams Overview (cont.) • administered by computer at more than 250 testing centers: Thompson Testing Services • Answer easy questions first and mark the more difficult ones for later • Passing score is 500 out of 700 which is a 71% • Test dates and application fees are in the handbook in the very first page. • You can register on-line or in the form in the handbook
Choosing and Exam • PHR questions tend to be operational /technical level • SPHR questions tend to be more strategic and/or policy level • GPHR questions assess your mastery of the necessary knowledge to be successful in the worldwide marketplace.

Syllabus Extensive amount of information in a short amount of face time • None of the material in the 6 units should be new to you as MSHRM students • The advantage of this framework and approach to reviewing the domain of HR stands in it’s applied background • SHRM and HRCP • Nationally recognized HR agencies with strong reputations
