3 8 3 Entertainment ▶Reading Comprehension Elvis Presley Honored in Budapest Elvis Presley (1935-1977), one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century, became an official citizen of Budapest. The Hungarian capital announced its plan to commemorate the American singer with an honorary citizenship and a landmark in his name. Presley is recognized for his support of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, which aimed to overthrow the country’s Soviet government. “The reasons for honoring Elvis are not sentimental but political," said Budapest mayor IstvanTarlos, who did not have any Elvis album. The city launched an online poll, letting fans vote for which local feature should be renamed for the King. The shortlist of 12 landmarks included street corners, a spot near a shopping mall, and the Buda end of Margit Bridge, a bridge in Budapest that connects Buda and Pest across the Danube. Presley was an unlikely champion for the Hungarian people because the Hungarian people turned on their Soviet government in October 1956. The Hungarian Revolution was not successful. It was quashed just weeks later. Presley, however, saluted the uprising in January 1957 during his last appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The singer, then 22, performed Peace in the Valley, a gospel standard, as a tribute to the Hungarians’ plight. “He feels that this is sort of in the mood that he’d like to create,” the host explained. At the singer’s request, Sullivan asked the TV audience to donate to Hungarian relief efforts. Presley, widely known as the “King of Rock and Roll” or simply “the King,” is regarded as one of the most important figures of the 20th century. He was nominated for 14 Grammys. He won three Grammys and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at 36. He was inducted into four music halls of fame. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
