Causes of Red Leg • Hemorrhages of the leg (often inner thigh), result of septicemia. • Aeromonas hydrophila is the most common bacteria know to cause red leg. • Less common bacteria are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, Citrobacter, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli.
Signs, Treatment, and Prevention • Animal(s) may lose appetite and become weak or lethargic. • Hemorrhages may be the size of a pinpoint or very large. • Bacterial Cultures and sensitivities should be performed on affected animals; proper antibiotics will be determined from tests. • The cause of the infection should be corrected immediately, and affected animal(s) should be separated and kept under careful watch.
