Why do I need to know this stuff? • You will be there when something bad happens! • You need to know what to do! • You need to have a “feel” for those athletes who may have cardiac problems! • You need to know what to do to prevent cardiac problems in athletes!
How big is the problem of sudden cardiac death in athletes? • 0.3% general athlete population with a cardiac condition • Grade 9-12 – 5 million competitive athletes • NCAA, NAIA, and Jr colleges– >500,000 athletes • Professional athletes – 5000 • Excludes youth, middle school, master level athletes • May be > 10 million athletes in USA • Sudden death of 1:200,000 high school athletes per year
Ethics! • Athlete/family responsibility • Educational institution or club responsibility (Coaches, trainers) • Physician responsibility • Inherently dangerous activities • “Zero risk” activities
Other causes • Heat Stroke • Asthma • Aortic stenosis • Drug abuse • Coronary artery disease • Long QT Syndrome • Other • Myocarditis
