  3. Voluntary service... … is an exchange between an individual, or a group of individuals and a local community. The volunteer or group of volunteers offers time, energy and effort to a project of benefit to a community, and via this project the community offers to the volunteer or group of volunteers an opportunity for experimentation, learning and personal and collective development (Cotravaux, France)

International voluntary service projects 350 members: branches of international organisations and national organisations About 100,000 (young) participants every year in more than 100 countries International and local volunteers living and working together with the local population, to learn from each other

They are present in 23 countries, in all regions of Africa.

  10. Networks In Northern Africa the Union of Maghreb Voluntary Associations (UMAV) ensures the co-ordination between the voluntary service organizations in the Maghreb countries. In Western Africa a co-ordination called UWAVWA was established in 1970 in Accra, Ghana. Since 2005 a number of Western African organisations have been re- defining the co-ordination mechanism in the region. In Southern Africa the Southern African Workcamps Co-ordination (SAWC) was created in 1994 and comprises 8 organisations. In Eastern Africa the Eastern African Workcamps Association (EAWA) was established in 1995 and has now 17 member organisations.

They are present in 21 countries, in all regions of Asia, including the Middle East.

N.V.D.A. • The Network for Voluntary Development in Asia is an international networking NGO which promotes international voluntary service, especially workcamps, in Asia/Pacific. • Its aims and goals are to: * Improve local and global situations in nature, environment, culture, poverty and human rights, * Support local NGOs, self-reliance and development of local communities, * Promote friendship, understanding and solidarity among world youth and local people. • And its main activities are • Regular events (Training & Networking Workcamps, etc.) • Sending volunteers to workcamps all over the world • Common actions in Asia for various social issues • Starting workcampsin new countries • Improving NGOs and their projects

They are present in 34 countries, in all regions of Europe.

  15. The A.E.Y.V.E. Initiated by the Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service CCIVS and supported by the Asia Europe Foundation ASEF, Asia Europe Young Volunteers Exchange AEYVE was launched in 2001. AEYVE is an exchange programme between young volunteers from Asia and Europe. Through AEYVE, volunteers and organizations in Asia and Europe are able to promote intercultural learning, mutual understanding, and cooperation while partaking in voluntary services in Asia and Europe. The aims of AEYVE are to foster mutual understanding, cooperation and exchanges between voluntary service organizations in Asia and Europe. Particular emphasis is given to networking between organizations in order to transfer knowledge between regions and achieve common standard in quality.

They are present in 17 countries, in North, Central and South America.

  17. Euro-LA seminar A seminar was held in Peru in May 2005 with the idea to allow European-based and Latin American organisations to strengthen their partnerships and to develop new ones. The seminar focussed on the identification of a strategy for Euro-Latin American co-operation starting by allowing the organisations to get to know each others’ activities and then focus on common needs and answers. Documents of referenceconcerning the information given as well as the quality standards applied in the various organisations were distributed and are available.

  18. HIV/AIDS awareness raising In October 2005 a seminar and workcamp were organised in co-operation with UNESCO to adapt the French manual on awareness raising on HIV AIDS using forum theatre to anglophone Africa. CCIVS is currently working on a new version of a kit for awareness raising on HIV AIDS in anglophone Africa using forum theatre. CCIVS is also developing a pilot project on an itinerant series of capacity building seminars in various African countries aiming at training a maximum number of youth leaders on efficient and culturally adapted ways to raise awareness on HIV AIDS.

  19. Conflict resolution Conflict resolution is in fact a permanent feature of any voluntary service project since we consider that the notion of conflict forms part of every-day life and the ways to solve it at micro level are also relevant for macro level. Several CCIVS member organisations are active in the field of conflict prevention, reconciliation and conflict resolution. Some focus on the role of civil society organisations in conflict area while others are obliged to function in a situation of conflict. CCIVS is currently working on a new edition of its publication “Voluntary Service in Conflict areas”, which will soon be available on line.

  20. Cultural Diversity • An approach based on UNESCO’s Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity. • April 2005: seminar ‘Cultural diversity and voluntary service: international solidarity or diversity consumption?’ in the Czech Republic. • Creation of the CD-ROM ‘no size can fit all’ for coordinators of international youth groups.

  21. Education for Sustainable Development • Freshwater guide (2003) • a practical tool to organise activities on the issue of fresh water in international voluntary service projects • Globalisation kit • an introduction to the theme of globalisation, games and activities on the topic, to be used in international voluntary service projects

  22. Culture of peace • 10th July: "CCIVS Culture of Peace Day". Messages of Peace were created in different local projects and sent to the two flagship events of CCIVS. • events in Hiroshima, Japan and Bethlehem, Palestine, promoting world peace through an international workcamp and a seminar on tools for peace • 40m² Peace Quilt made up of the 100 "Peace Pieces" was exposed at UNESCO Headquarters in November 2000
