  1. STD’s • Introductory Statements • Abstinence: Means to abstain (not participate) from sexual activity. • You do not develop immunity to any of these diseases like you do to mumps or measles. You can get them over and over again. • You do not get these diseases from doorknobs, toilet seats, or drinking glasses. • STD’s attack the mucous membranes of the body • General Terms • STD = Sexually Transmissible Diseases • Sexual Contact: Usually refers to sexual intercourse, but can also mean just touching of the genital areas.

STD’s Prevention/ treatment Symptoms/signs transmission Name of STD genital herpes • Painful blister-like sores on or around the genitals and/or buttocks • Sores highly infectious • Women may have sores in vagina and may not know it • Sores can return monthly, after emotional stress, or after years of inactivity (virus hides in the nerves) • Sexual contact, intercourse, touching sores with any part of your body • Birthing process • Virus (can’t kill it) Abstinence/ No cure, but antiviral medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication. Abstinence/ Antibiotics, but bacteria is increasingly resistant to antibiotics • Sexual contact • Birthing process (can cause blindness in baby) • bacteria • Very similar to chlamydia • Males: white discharge, painful urination • females: usually do not know until PID, which causes sterility gonorrhea
