FOR YOUR SUMMARY: • Identity the genre, the title and the author. In his article, “The Ethnobiologist’s Dilemma,” Jared Diamond… This, or something like it, is the beginning of your first sentence.
DO NOT EVALUATE • You are Summarizing, or Paraphrasing the AUTHOR’S main ideas, not your own, or your reactions to them. Do not stray from the main ideas. • Do not include a PERSONAL RESPONSE. This is not the assignment for opinions. Stick to what the AUTHOR SAYS, what the ARTICLE DOES • Beware of “I” and “You”
SIZE MATTERS • A summary should be exactly that – a CONDENSED version of the text’s main points. It is the GIST of a text. • Keep it to 250 words. If you are over, ask yourself what isn’t necessary. Trim the fat. • A paraphrase should be roughly the same length at the paragraph being paraphrased
PARAPHRASING • Use your OWN WORDS. Imagine you are having a CONVERSATION. How would you restate the text? • Keep it simple. Don’t feel you have to compete with the author’s vocabulary. • Review section 12f2 in the Handbook. Notice how the student simplifies things. Verbs are key – “decoding” becomes “figuring out” “exchange” and “engage” becomes “use” • Be aware of sentence structure. Do not copy the author’s. Combine ideas.
USE “SAYS” AND “DOES” • Page 53 and 54 in the textbook • SAYS statements – summarize a portion the content • DOES statements – sum up how the text functions = ITS PURPOSE • Use SAY statements to build structure for your SUMMARY • Combine with DOES statements to get at main ideas
SIGNAL PHRASES ARE YOUR FRIEND • Page 54 • Help you KEEP IT SIMPLE • Help you summarize and paraphrase in YOUR OWN WORDS • Keep you from EVALUATING and PERSONALLY RESPONDING
Note changes from RaiderWriter • The following 3 articles are located in Ch. 12 of your textbook. To complete your article summary, select one of the articles from the list below OR use a different article chosen by your classroom instructor. • Stephen Budiansky: "Lost in Translation" pp. 238-244 • Scott Jaschik: "Winning Hearts and Minds on Plagiarism" pp. 261-266 • Tina Rosenberg: "Everyone Speaks Text Message" pp. 267-271
More RW changes • After you’ve completed your summary, you will paraphrase a brief but complex passage from the same text. Your goal in this assignment is to restate the ideas of the passage in your own words and do so in a way that is readable and understandable. To complete this assignment, choose a passage from the texts above ORone selected by your instructor that is part of the text you summarized and paraphrase that passage. • These AND ONLY THESE are you PARAPHRASE options – • Pg. 241-242 Last full paragraph: “One thing demonstrated…” • Pg. 264 Second full paragraph: “Several of the speakers…” • Pg. 268 Paragraph #5: “And yet, N’Ko was invented…”
IF YOU PARAPHASE SOMETHING OTHER THAN 1 OF THE 3 LISTED YOU WILL FAIL THE ASSIGNMENT
FORMATTING FOR BA2 • SEPARATE and LABEL each section • For example: SUMMARY Blah blah blah blah • For PARAPHRASE identify PARAGRAPH and PAGE NUMBER • For example: PARAPHRASE p. 264 2ndfull paragraph (I’ve already done it for you) Blah blah blah blah
Homework • For EACH of the 3 Articles write down some things that you liked about the article, and some things that you did not like. This can be written or typed, as long as you have something to hand in and I can read it.
