Myositis = Inflammation of the muscle • Ossificans= Bone formation • Traumatica= Trauma
How does this happen? • Myositis ossificans are usually the result of direct injury to a muscle • a self-limiting disease • It may present as a soft-tissue mass with a broad differential diagnosis • including highly malignant tumors, such as soft-tissue sarcomas.
Treatment? • To treat start out with rest, elevation, and immobilization. This minimizes additional trauma and decreases the likelihood of incapacitating bone formations. • Surgery is an option however it isn't always necessary. Athletes that do have surgery they do return to play sooner. • Use anti-inflammatory medicine.
More treatment… • Active range of motion exercises progressing to resistive exercises usually effect a satisfactory recovery and return to full athletic participation.
