Back to the basics Why??? Because some of us forgot the basics Because some of us never knew the basics Because some of us are new Time constraints – I only have an hour Most important reason why….. Because Rich said I had to talk about it
Arrival • Try to be on the field 15-30 minutes before kick-off. That means dressed and on the field • Your uniform should be clean • Spikes should be shined before you arrive at the game site
Pre-Game • Have a good pre-game meeting This is critical • Go over Free Kicks, Scrimmage Kicks, PATs • Make sure everyone is on the same sheet of music and knows what they are doing before you hit the field
Before Game • Walk the field just like you do for a Varsity game • Talk to the coaches and get the captain’s numbers • Remind the coaches about the RA, Play Sheets, Sweat bands, etc • Remember Sub-Varsity games are played using the same rules as Varsity games

Referee - Responsibility • Counts “A” players and signal • 3-4 yards deeper than deepest back and wide enough to view offside tackle • Key offside tackle to determine run or pass • Responsible for ball, runner, and action around him to neutral zone • Follows the play • On pass plays stay with the QB
Umpire - Responsibility • Spot the ball • Count “A” players with the Ref and signal • Position 4-7 yards deep • Make sure “A” has five players on LOS numbered 50-79 • Key G-C-G • On pass plays move to the LOS • Watch for ineligibles downfield • Watch for illegal forward pass • On short passes over the middle turn and help out with catch/no catch
Linesman & Line Judge - Responsibility • Count “B” players and signal • Straddle LOS and signal if receiver is off LOS • If motion man goes away he is yours all the way – drop your hand • Key snap, tackle, back • If your receiver is not pressed man-to-man you can help out with the initial block by the tackle on your side • Linesman also has control of the chain gang
All Officials • Keep play boxed in • See ball before you blow your whistle • Watch runner if he goes OOB • Drop your bean bag if you have to • See ball before you blow your whistle • Be respectful, hustle, communicate, and give them a good game • Know down and distance every play • Make sure the clock status is OK
Arriving at the game site • Arrive well in advance • Have a clean uniform • Spikes should be clean and shined before you arrive at the game site (perception) • Dropping / throwing the bean bag • Dropping / throwing the flag • 1st touching on a KO is not a foul • Signals – Killing the clock and Incomplete • Let play pass you and follow at a safe distance • Wing guys must square off • Be a player watcher not a ball watcher • Sunglasses
The official uniform: 1. Black-and-white vertically striped, long or short-sleeved knit shirt shall be worn. All officials, in a given game, are to wear the same type shirt. 2.
