Calculator Basics: • Turn the calculator [ON] • Turn the calculator [2nd][OFF] • Your TI has an automatic power-off after 5 minutes of inactivity. • When this happens, your data will be saved for future use. • Access your product number and ID [2nd][MEM] • product #: • ID: • Adjust the contrast to darken • [2nd][5] • Adjust the contrast to lighten • [2nd][6] Before we proceed, check your default settings in [MODE]. We want the left-most settings. Murphy’s Law: If your batteries go dead, it will happen during an exam – carry an extra set of AAA batteries in your backpack! Homescreen Basics: • Multiplication can be performed three ways: • (Press enter to view the answer.) • 13 [x] 57 • This will show as * on screen • 5(12+7) • We will use ( ) to maintain the order of operations • Implied multiplication using variables or defined constants • Storing and using a stored value for x: • #[STO][ ][ENTER] • Now we can evaluate 27x-9 for the stored x-value The homescreen has 8 lines with 16 characters per line. Homescreen Basics: • Squaring and exponents • is entered as 7[ ]2 • MUST be entered using ( )s • other exponents can be entered • using the carrot key: 3[^]4 • MUST be entered using ( )s • Roots/Radicals • square roots: is entered as [2nd][ ]144 • cubed roots: is entered as [MATH][4:][ENTER]64 • other roots: is entered as 6[MATH][5:]64 • Use parentheses to evaluate Press [ENTER] to view the answer. Homescreen Basics: • Negate key [(-)] vs. subtract key [-] • Evaluate • Using the subtract key for BOTH will subtract 7 and 12 • from our last entered-answer • To view/recall and use your last • entered answer hit [2nd][ANS] • Absolute value • is entered as [MATH][NUM][1:abs]5[-]16 • Evaluate Remember that you have a catalog of operations. Homescreen Basics: • You will often need to use ( )s to maintain • the order of operations. • Evaluate • To change the answer to fraction form, press [MATH][1:] • To change the answer back to decimal form, press [MATH][2:] • To find the least common multiple or lowest common denominator: • To find the LCD for press [MATH][NUM][8:]18[,]24 • You can enter more numbers, but separate lists of numbers with comas. • To find the greatest common factor: • To find the GCF for 48 and 72 press [MATH][NUM][9:]48[,]72 Press [CLEAR] to clear a line – Press [CLEAR] a second time to clear the entire homescreen. Homescreen Basics: • Let’s square -13 • Then take the absolute value of -17 – 65 • Take the 5th root of -32 • Now evaluate • …whoops! That should have been • Press [2nd][ENTRY] to recall the last entered expression. • Now, just arrow over make respective changes: (we will go left to right) • Press [DEL] to delete a highlighted character • Overtype to make changes • Press [2nd][INS] to insert in front of the cursor • Press [2nd][ENTRY] multiple times to access previous expressions If you get an error [ERR] – select [2:Goto] and the TI will highlight the error that you need to fix!
