A New Passage to India"Germany needs a new generation of academics with Indian expertise" Indo German Centre for Sustainability at IIT Madras • Centre of Excellence with a focus on energy, solid waste management, rural development and water resources manangement, showcasing German top class research • Format: guest professors, mobility schemes Indo German Centres at German universities • Modern Indian studies • Objective: Lectures on India as a modern nation, qualifiying young academics who are interested in India • Format: Rotating Chairs at German universities, mobility scheme, conferences, workshops and publications

  13. And there is a whole lot more going on…. (I) • Start of the "Science Express“ mainly organised by Max Planck Society (MPG) • To showcase German research and to interest young Indians in German HE and research • Travels 15.000 kilometers on 217 days through 57 Indian cities • 2,2 million visitors • Indian Government considers sending a similar train through Germany

And there is whole lot more going on….(II) Goals and measures taken since 2000/2001: Goal 1: to raise number of Indian students in GermanyMeasures: study courses taught in English; HE fairs (for example EHEF); road shows; special websites for Indian users; poster campaign with testimonials Goal 2: Stronger German presence in Indian HE sectorMeasures: Marketing expert at DAAD office in New-Delhi; establishment of two Information Centres (IC) in Mumbai (now Pune) and Chennai; Information Points (IP) at universities in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai (as of 2009); since 2007: joint office with DFG and AvH

And there is whole lot more going on….(III) Max Planck Partner Groups in India In October 2004, the Max Planck Society signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Department of Science & Technology which serves as the basis for expanding and further strengthening collaboration with Indian Partner Institutes. To date, 12 Max Planck Partner Groups in India are working; more are in a planning stage.

  16. And there is whole lot more going on….(IV) Indo German Center for Science and Research (IGCSR) ,., • opened in September 2008 in New Delhi; • 10 million Euros funding for the next five years from both Indian and German governments; • aimed at 2+2 projects in applied sciences
