Interaction for language acquisition Similar to Krashen’s Input Hypotheses in that it claims that comprehensible input is important for language learning Departure from Krashen: the effectiveness of comprehensible input is greatly increased when learners have to negotiate for meaning in face to face interaction and communication
Focus on negotiated meaning • What is “negotiation of meaning”? • Interlocutors must overcome communication breakdowns. • Communicative strategies must be used to help the interaction and to overcome the obstacle, i.e. • Slowing down speech • Speaking more deliberately • Rewording, clarifying • Repairing • Paraphrasing
Additional results of negotiation The process itself may result in further input The time interlocutors need to process input is increased Interaction help to focus learner’s attention on the gap between their knowledge of the language and what they are hearing, thus motivating learning Interaction also may point out to learner structures and or items they have yet to be exposed to
Classroom implications Students need opportunities to check what they are understanding and to seek clarification Students need guidance in repairing communication in order to establish a topic of conversation Interaction increases self-awareness, which helps students be more active learners Students with opportunities to check their comprehension through interaction build confidence and motivate future learning opportunities
