Expedition – • specific science mission to study a specific locale • research platform in motion - operates from specific time/point of departure to return • science party onboard • activities include remote sensing, in situ sampling, instrument deployments • in marine context, typically a “cruise”

  3. Expedition data management – current projects – • Legacy of Ocean Exploration (LOE) • Antarctic Master Directory (AMD) • Extended Continental Shelf (ECS) • Scientific Earth Drilling Information System (SEDIS) • Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R)

  4. R2R pilot project – vision – National Data Centers Fleet Data Portal Research Vessels Data Assembly Centers (SAMOS, MGDS, JASADCP, etc.)

  5. Expedition data model – Collection Expedition Data Set Event Log Data Object (from a sensor or a sampler)

  8. MMI projects underway – • publish expedition vocabularies at mmisw.org • develop device ontology (case study - scientific sonars)
