  6. Joel

  7. Who is Joel? • What does “Joel” mean? • Jehovah is God • When did Joel prophecy? • He may have lived as early as the time of Elisha (late 800 B.C.s), or as late as the time of Jeremiah, Lehi, & Daniel (early 600s to late 500 B.C.s). • Who is quoting who? • He is either original and quoted by many or he synthesizes the words of former prophets before him.

  8. The Prophecy of Joel • Many elements of this prophecy are almost universally applicable. It applies to: • Elisha’s time • Jeroboam’s time • Isaiah’s time • Jeremiah’s time • Jesus’ & Peter’s time • Joseph Smith’s time • Our time

  9. On September 22, 1823 as the Angel Moroni taught Joseph Smith, "He ... quoted the second chapter of Joel, from the twenty-eighth verse to the last. He also said that this was not yet fulfilled, but was soon to be" (JS-H 1:41).

  10. From the day that He [the Father] and His Beloved Son manifested themselves to the boy Joseph, there has been a tremendous cascade of enlightenment poured out upon the world.… President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

  11. The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared: “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: “And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. (Joel 2:28-32). President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

  12. There has been more of scientific discovery during these years than during all of the previous history of mankind. Transportation, communication, medicine, public hygiene, the unlocking of the atom, the miracle of the computer, with all of its ramifications, have blossomed forth, particularly in our own era. President Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, Nov. 2001, p.4)

  13. “I do not believe that this great outpouring of knowledge happened by chance. All of this secular knowledge did not come solely from the creative minds of men and women. Mankind has been on the earth a long time. Over the centuries, knowledge came at a snail’s pace. I believe that the appearance of God the Father and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, in 1820 to Joseph Smith unlocked the heavens not only to the great spiritual knowledge revealed in this dispensation but also to secular knowledge…. President James E. Faust (Ensign, May 2000, 17)

  14. “New ideas, including scientific inventions and discoveries of better ways of doing things, were being produced annually at 39 a year from 4,000 b.c. to a.d. 1, contrasted to 3,840 new ideas a year in the 19th century, while today they are created at the rate of 110,000 a year.” President James E. Faust (Ensign, May 2000, 17)

  15. How have you been blessed by the fulfillment of Joel’s prophesy? (Ie. How has modern technology blessed your life?)

  16. I maintain that had there been no restoration of the gospel, and no organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there would have been no radio; there would have been no airplane, and there would not have been the wonderful discoveries in medicine, chemistry, electricity, and the many other things wherein the world has been benefited by such discoveries. Joseph Fielding Smith (Doctrines of Salvation, 1: 175)

  17. Under such conditions these blessings would have been withheld, for they belong to the dispensation of the fullness of times of which the restoration of the gospel and the organization of the Church constitute the central point, from which radiates the Spirit of the Lord throughout the world. Joseph Fielding Smith (Doctrines of Salvation, 1: 175)

  18. Q: Does this mean that inventors are inspired of God? Does this mean that God “pouring out his spirit upon all flesh” means that He is giving people ideas for inventions which will help move the work along? A: In part, yes. Q: Are most inventors LDS? Are they religious people?

  19. Mormon Inventors

  20. “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: “And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. (Joel 2:28-32). One example of how this was fulfilled.

  21. This Mormon farm boy, in 1921, was breaking up soil with his uncle's horse-drawn harrow—when the idea walloped him. He gazed at the plowed rows of dirt behind him, and a vision of a line of excited electrons danced in his head. And so, the idea for television was born. Farnsworth was only 14 years old. Philo T. Farnsworth

  22. In high school he carried this idea in his head: You could transmit an image of an object from one place to another by converting the picture into electricity and shooting the stream of electrons at a fluorescent screen in a vacuum tube. To show his chemistry teacher, Justin Tolman, how it worked, Farnsworth scribbled a diagram of his idea on the school blackboard. He was 15.

  23. "I am a deeply religious man, I know that God exists," said Farnsworth in a KSL interview a year before his death. "I know that I have never invented anything. I have been a medium by which these things were given to the culture as fast as culture could earn them. I give the credit to God." Philo T. Farnsworth

  24. “Television is a gift from God. And He will hold those who utilize this instrument accountable to Him.” Philo T. Farnsworth (LDS inventor of TV)

  25. Philo T. Farnsworth’s son, Kent, summed up how his father felt about how the TV is being used. He would say to his children, in essence, "There’s nothing on it worthwhile, and we’re not going to watch it in this household, and I don’t want it in your intellectual diet."

  26. Jonah

  27. Who is Jonah? • What does “Jonah” mean? • “Dove.” • When did Jonah prophecy? • He prophesied during the reign of Jeroboam II, approximately 788 B.C. • Interesting Fact • Jonah’s book is not written by Jonah but another writer some time after Jonah’s mission is complete.

  28. Jonah 1:3

  29. Jonah 1:3 No Tarshish will ever be better than the Nineveh the Lord calls you to.

  30. Why is Jonah running? Jonah’s mission was a mission of mercy to a Gentile people whom he (and most Israelites) believed were unfit for God’s mercy. He didn’t believe the Ninevite heathens deserved God’s mercy (see Jonah 4:1-3).

  31. Jonah 1:4-15

  32. Jonah was a prophet, tried to run away. • Didn’t go to Nineveh, instead he went astray. • A Storm began to rock his boat going to Tarshish, • Overboard they threw him and God said to a fish: • “Swallow the prophet!” • “Swallow the prophet!” • “Swallow the prophet! • He went astray.” • “Swallow the prophet!” • “Swallow the prophet!” • “Swallow the prophet! • He went astray.”

  33. Alma 27:17  “Now the joy of Ammon was so great even that he was full; yea, he was swallowed up in the joy of his God, even to the exhausting of his strength; and he fell again to the earth.” Every missionary gets swallowed up in something!

  34. Alma 27:17  “Now the joy of Ammon was so great even that he was full; yea, he was swallowed up in the joy of his God, even to the exhausting of his strength; and he fell again to the earth.” Every missionary gets swallowed up in something!

  35. When you run from the Lord you eventually end up in … Jonah 2:2

  36. Jonah 3:1-2 God is a God of second chances.

  37. Jonah 3:4-10

  38. Jonah 4:1-2

  39. Jeffrey R. Holland Quorum of the Twelve (BYU Speeches, 13 January 2009)

  40. “Let people repent. Let people grow. Believe that people can change and improve. “Is that faith? Yes! Is that hope? Yes! Is it charity? Yes! Above all, it is charity, the pure love of Christ.” Jeffrey R. Holland Quorum of the Twelve (BYU Speeches, 13 January 2009)

  41. Amos

  42. Who is Amos? • What does “Amos” mean? • “Burden.” • When did Amos prophecy? • He was contemporary with Jonah& Isaiah. He prophesied during the reign of king Uzziah of Judah and Jeroboam II of Israel, approximately 780-740 B.C. • Interesting Fact • Amos was a shepherd from Tekoa, 12 miles south of Jerusalem.
