  4. Keyboard To type, use your fingers to press down on keys

  5. Hand Placement on the Keyboard Left Hand Right Hand

  6. Your Left hand should be on the keys: A, S, D, F

  7. Your Right hand should be on the keys: J, K, L, ;

  8. Activity: Placing your hands on the Keyboard (Left Hand) Put your index finger on “F”

  9. (Left Hand) Put your middle finger on “D”

  10. (Left Hand) Put your ring finger on “S”

  11. (Left Hand) Put your pinky finger on “A”

  12. (Left Hand) Put your thumb on the left hand side of the “Space Bar”

  13. Activity: Placing your hands on the Keyboard (Right Hand) Put your index finer on “J”

  14. (Right Hand) Put your middle finger on “K”

  15. (Right Hand) Put your ring finger on “L”

  16. (Right Hand) Put your pinky finger on “;”

  17. (Right Hand) Put your thumb on the right hand side of the “Space Bar”

  18. Great Job! Remember to always place your hands like that when you’re typing!

  20. Activity: Typing Exercise Turn on your computers and (if necessary) login. Then open Microsoft Word.

  27. Control Keys Keys that are used alone or in combination with other keys to perform certain actions

  28. Most frequently used control keys are: ESC, Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and the Windows Logo key

  29. ESC Used to exit a program

  30. Ctrl Used with an additional key to perform a specific function

  31. Alt Used to change the function of other pressed keys

  32. Shift Used with a letter key to type capital letters and other alternate upper characters

  33. Windows logo Used to bring up the start menu or start screen on PC’s

  34. Function Keys They are used to perform specific tasks. They are labeled as F1, F2, F3, and so on.

  39. Activity: Navigation Keys Practice On your Microsoft Word document from the last activity, move the cursor up and down using the navigation keys. Then do the same going left and right.
