  1. Planks of Confidence

  2. List the following in the order you find most important in a speech • Content • Organization • Notes • Friendliness • Impression • Dedication • Empathy • Newness • Conviction • Enthusiasm (1 being the most important thing in a speech)

  3. Content : Have something worthwhile to say. Research your topic. Don’t base your speaking on assertions and emotional appeals only.

  4. Organization : Have some type of outline that is easy for you and your audience to follow. Have an intro that leads to a thesis and a conclusion that summarizes. Don’t rely on the spontaneity of the moment!

  5. Notes : Jot down your ideas in a brief, directed form. Remember problems when dealing with note cards too. Don’t put too much on 1 note card Don’t write everything you want to say word for word (because you shouldn’t read from your note cards.)

  6. Friendliness : Be congenial. Smile!

  7. Impression : Getting off to a good start is essential in building confidence. Dress and groom appropriately as well. (Remember—no boobies and no butts!) Do not play with your hair. Make sure that your gestures contribute to what you are saying, not distract from it.

  8. Dedication : Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice looking at people while speaking. Practice speaking, including places to emphasis, pause, etc.. Practice gestures. PRACTICE!!

  9. EMPATHY: Know how it feels to feel that way. Establish common ground with your audience.

  10. Newness : Apply some originality. Personal stories are “real gold” (but make sure the stories are valid and applicable to the topic too).

  11. Conviction : Believe in what you say.

  12. Enthusiasm : Get fired up!! Be passionate about what you’re talking about. If your not excited about talking about it then the audience won’t be excited to hear it.

  14. Group Activity Choose 2-3 other classmates (no more than 4 students per group) and create a skit that includes one plank of confidence as an example (what you should do) and an example of what you should NOT do (according to the definitions given.) • The Planks of Confidence will be the focus in your skits. Keep your skits short (around 2 min). Every group must perform a skit. Please be prepared to explain your what planks of confidence relate to your skit and how. • On a piece of paper explain what plank of confidence you are focusing on and how it is and/or is not displayed in your skit.
