Solar For the Homeowner Increasing comfort, lowering energy costs, and helping the planet. The Power of Three
Why Solar? • We need to replace limited fossil fuels with clean renewable energy. • We can add value to our home. • We can save money on our energy bills. • It’s a proven technology • There are financial incentives • Utility Rebates • Federal Tax Credits • Property Tax Exemptions
The Power of Three Pool Heating Hot Water Photovoltaic
How It Works Pool water is pumped to a collector, where it is heated by the sun. The warm water is returned to the pool.
Benefits of Solar Pool Heating Enjoy a longer swim season – spring, summer and fall! No waiting – it’s always warm! Enjoy at least 20 years of worry-free performance and savings Keep your pool at a higher temperature – enjoy swimming! Protect yourself from fuel shortages and rate hikes Reduce country’s dependence on foreign oil Reduce annual pollution by thousands of pounds
Benefits of SolarWater Heating Eliminate up to 100% of water heating costs Recoup thousands with rebates and tax credits Enjoy unlimited hot water for all your household needs Store a back-up water supply for emergencies Protect yourself from fuel shortages and rate hikes Enjoy at least 30 years of worry-free performance and savings Reduce annual pollution by thousands of pounds Help our nation’s security and economy by reducing our dependence on foreign oil
Integrated CollectorSystem PROS No storage tank needed Simple “sky light” look No moving parts Indefinite life span A simple system that requires no pumps or controls for operation. It combines a water storage tank and the solar collector in one unit. CONS: Heavy roof load (650 lbs.) Less efficient Loses 25% of heat overnight May freeze
Thermosiphon System PROS No storage tank needed Efficient No moving parts 30 yr life span Insulated tank Freeze resistant These collect heat from the sun and transfer it to your water through a natural process, relying on the simple principle that hot water rises and cold water sinks. CONS: Very heavy roof load (1000+ lbs.) Unconventional look
Active Direct System PROS High efficiency Simple “sky light” look Light weight Insulated tank Open loop active systems heat the water supply directly. CONS: Freeze risk Needs storage tank 1-Year warranty on active parts Needs power to work
Active Closed System PROS Light weight Simple “sky light” look No freezing High efficiency These use a separate fluid that transfers heat to the water through a heat exchanger. CONS: Needs storage tank 1-Year warranty on active parts Needs power to work
How PV Works Photovoltaic (PV) cells are made of special materials called semiconductors such as silicon, which is currently the most commonly used. Basically, when light strikes the cell, a certain portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is transferred to the semiconductor.
How PV Works When the sun hits the cell, it excites electrons in the B area and they migrate to the A area. The electron flow provides the current, and the cell's electric field causes a voltage. With both current and voltage, we have power, which is the product of the two.
