California Public Utility Commission’sBroadband Mapping ProjectDefinition of Broadband: the current CPUC definition of broadband or “high speed” internet is at least 6 megabits per second (mbps) for download speed and 1.5 mbps for upload speed. If you have these speeds or higher, you are considered "served" by broadband.
Q. What is this? A. The California Public Utilities Commission is participating in a national effort to create an accurate map of all broadband,(internet, Wi-Fi), coverage in the U.S Q. Why? A. To identify areas of greatest need for improved Broadband coverage Q. Who should participate? A. Everyone ,with Great, average, slow or no internet connection. All input is needed to create a great map. Q. Why should I participate? A. "Broadband coverage in our area is currently misrepresented on the CPUC map. This is mostly due to over reporting by the large providers. The way to correct these errors is by communicating actual coverage via the CPUC mapping site." Q. How does a more accurate map help? A. California State grant money is available to areas of greatest need to help facilitate installation or improvement of coverage. These grants will help keep your rates competitive.
Q. Why is this important to all Calaveras residents ? A. All people in Calaveras County need access to fast internet. It is the fourth utility. It is as necessary for economic health as water ,gas and electricity. The student needs it to do homework, the job seeker to apply for jobs, the Senior citizen to stay independent longer, the businessman to be competitive, the renter to find an apartment, the farmer to take advantage of the latest cost cutting technology, the tourist to find their way to events .
This is a two step process. First, run the internet connection speed test by typing “speedtest.net” in the search window as shown below. Then, click “speedtest.net by Ookla”
Test result screen, write down download speed and upload speed, close this window
http://www.broadbandmap.ca.gov/ Step two: to enter the test results in the CPUC map go to:
In this step you are helping to correct the errors in the map. After you have clicked locate Your residence or place of work will then show up on a map. Click on each of the tabs marked "Fixed", "Mobile" and "Satellite" and scroll down on each to see the list of what Internet providers the CPUC has recorded for your location. Notice if there are any misrepresentations of coverage or omissions of coverage. (For example: the CPUC says that AT&T or Comcast provides service, but you know for a fact -because you have called- that they don't; or they don't list your current provider at all). Make note of any issues. There is section to enter this information later
No takes you this screen, select a provider, or if no provider told you no, click next,
Add your notes you took earlier here if you selected no ,click submit, you’re done
