Implementation Process Year II Lafourche Parish Schools Comprehensive Professional School Counseling
We’re making progress… • …a little bit at a time! • www.bestwayout.com
“You must never be fearful of what you are doing when it is right.” • ~Rosa Parks
A Quick Review… The Four Components:
Foundation… • Mission Statement • Beliefs/Philosophy Statements • Student Content Standards for Academic, Career and Personal/Social Development
Management System… • Agreements • Advisory Council • Use of Data • Action Plans • Use of Time • Calendars
Delivery System… • School Guidance Curriculum • Individual Student Planning • Responsive Services • Systems Support
Accountability… • Results Reports • School Counselor Performance Standards • Program Audit
A Four Letter Word… • DATA!
Three Types… • Process data • -method of evaluation using figures such as number of students served, groups and classroom visits; also show amounts of activities rather than the results from them. • Perception data • -measure what students and others observe or perceive, knowledge gained, attitudes and beliefs held or competencies achieved. • Results data • -the outcomes; how students are measurably different as a result of the program delivery.
2009-2010 District Process Data: • Elementary School Level • Classroom guidance lessons delivered-2204 • Group guidance lessons/sessions-267 • Middle School Level • Classroom guidance lessons delivered-209 • Group guidance lessons/sessions-65
High School Level • Classroom guidance lessons delivered-255 • Group guidance lessons/sessions-87 • PASS Sites • Classroom guidance lessons delivered-13 • Group guidance lessons/sessions-205
Where we’re going next… • Foundation: • Review/revise mission and beliefs/philosophy statements by counselors and principals • Introduction/utilization of “National Standards for Students” in delivery services (guidance curriculum)
Management System: • Review/revise management agreements between principals and counselors • Establish district Advisory Council (school level in spring semester) • Continue process data and incorporate perception data (some results data in spring) • Use of Time analysis (by level) • Calendars (monthly in fall; weekly in spring)
Delivery System: • Guidance Lessons: • Based on data analysis between counselors and principals; delivered to all stakeholders • Minimum of two (2) required in addition to “Introduction of Services” to students; one must be in different domain from last year • Minimum of one (1) parent session in addition to “Introduction of Services” on a particular topic
(“Delivery” continued…) • Minimum of one (1) teacher session on a specific topic other than beginning of the year procedures • Minimum of one (1) support group with planned number of sessions on a specific topic of need • Middle/high schools must deliver a guidance lesson in the personal/social domain • SUGGESTION:Both parent and teacher sessions should be on the same issue (from that group’s perspective) determined by data and decided upon by counselor/principal collaboration.
Recommended “Use of Time” Chart • Refer to “Weekly Time Schedule…Delivery Services” Handout
Individual Student Planning: • as needed with goal of 50% of minimum percentage recommended on “Use of Time” chart (varies per level) • Responsive Services: • as needed with goal of 50% of minimum percentage recommended on “Use of Time” chart (varies per level)
Systems Support: • as needed with goal of suggested percentage range as recommended on “Use of Time” chart
Accountability: • Program Audit-annual audit of yearly program progression • School Counselor Performance Standards-annual lesson observations • Results Reports-planned use of all three data types
Required advocacy efforts: • Green means go…
and here they are… • mandated documented quarterly meetings between each principal and counselor(s) • continued quarterly professional development opportunities • promote administrative/teacher efforts for infusion lessons by professional school counselor • continued participation in commemorating annual “National School Counseling Week”
School Counselor = Life Saver • “The number one indicator of success for a child is a good relationship with a caring adult.” • ~Fortune Magazine
