  2. 1st Setting Up Your Legal Scientific Notebook • All the work you do as a lab technician in this biotechnology course is recorded in your legal scientific notebook • To be a good scientist, you must be able to • set up experiments • Document conditions • Analyze data • And report results

  3. Why Set Up legal Scientific Notebook Everyone at a biotechnology company, or involved in any type of research or product design for that matter, must document all of their work Legal Scientific Notebooks are used for this

Why Set Up legal Scientific Notebook • Often times these are used in court cases • Settle patent disputes such as when someone argues that he/she made a discovery 1st and so says the discovery/process belongs to him/her • To report a specialists findings from testing, such as paternity suits or criminal cases • If a legal scientific notebook is not maintained it will be inadmissible as evidence

How To Set Up A Legal Scientific Notebook • 1st, it must be a bound notebook with pages sewn in • 2nd use only black pen to make all entries • Incorrect entries must be lined out with a single line only and must be labeled with your initials and the date • 3rd Graphs &other small sheets of paper may be pasted into the notebook when necessary • Use a glue stick • There should be no loose pages in notebook

  6. How To Set Up A Legal Scientific Notebook 4th number every page of the notebook at the top outside corner starting with the front side of the 1st page as number 1, and the backside of the 1st page as number 2 5th Make page 1 the title page

  7. Title Page: In the middle of the page in bold print write: BIOTECHNOLOGY NOTEBOOK 5thHour Lake Central High School (your name) September 15, 2011 Also write this info on the front cover of your notebook

How To Set Up A Legal Scientific Notebook • 6th Make pages 2-5 the Table of Contents. • Write Table of Contents at the top of each of these pages. • Make 2 columns, one for Title and one for Page • Record the Title and Page of each new activity • 7th Glue your laboratory notebook policy sheet to the inside back cover of your notebook • 8th Glue your “Laboratory Notebook Policy” sheet onto the inside front cover of your notebook

  9. 9th sign and date the bottom of every page • Also, write “go to (number)” on the bottom right hand side of the page to tell the reader where the rest of the information for this topic is located in the notebook • On the top of the page you “go to” write, “From page (number)” on the top left hand side of the page you came from

  10. Practice! • Make your first entry: DNA Extraction from Human Epithelial Cells on p7-? • Write out the materials and procedure needed for the DNA extraction lab we did • Make sure to write your procedure such that I could give it to a biology student to follow and they would be able to do the lab
