  1. Le subjonctif

  2. Verbs in the indicative (present tense) express objective facts & ideas. However, verbs in the subjunctive express a subjective attitude towards facts and ideas.

  3. Les formes • Verbs that are regular in the present tense, are also regular in the subjunctive. • Use the third person plural present tense stem (ils) & add –e, -es, -e, ions, -iez, -ent. • Note that the endings are present tense endings except the nous & vous forms, which are imparfait endings. • Some verbs are regular in the subjunctive even though they aren’t in the present tense: conduire, connaître, courir, dire, écrire, lire, mettre, offrir, partir, rire, suivre

  4. Examples • que je connaisse • que je mette • que je parte

  5. Avoir & être have irregular stems but irregular endings.

  6. These six verbs have a single irregular stem in the subjunctive, but regular endings:

  7. Many irregular verbs have two stems in the subjunctive. For the nous & vous form, use the present tense stem of the first person plural (nous). For the rest of the forms, use the present tense stem of the third person plural (ils).

  8. More verbs like boire:

  9. Aller & vouloir follow a different pattern:

  10. The subjunctive is used when there are two different subjects in a sentence that begins with an expression of doubt, opinion, desire or emotion. • Formula: Expression with que + second subject + subjunctive. • Je doute que nous puissionséliminer tout ce qui menace l’environnement. I doubt that we can eliminate everything that threatens the environment.

  11. Expressions

  12. The subjunctive is also used when the sentence has two different subjects & contains one of the following conjunctions: • J’achèterai ce DVD à moins que tu ne l’aies déjà. I’ll buy this DVD unless you already have it. • Elle partira avant qu’il ne fasse trop froid. She will leave before it gets too cold.

  13. The following are always followed by the subjunctive: • Quoique tu fasses un énorme effort avec ces enfants, nous ne pouvons pas les guérir de toutes leurs mauvaise habitudes. Even though you’re making a huge effort with these children, we cannot break them of all of their bad habits. • Rana travaillera jusqu’à ce qu’elle finisse ce reportage sur la crise économique. Rana will work until she finishes this report on the economic crisis.
