  1. Learning from Your Life Story • .Authentic leadership begins with understanding the story of your life • “The story of your life is not your life. It is your story.” –John Barth • Your life narrative is like a permanent recording playing in your head • Types of motivation • ex: loss of job, personal illness, untimely death of a close friend or relative, discriminated against, and rejected by peers

  2. Knowing Your Authentic Self • Courage and honesty • Leaders become more humane and willing to be vulnerable • Self-Awareness • Most recognized external success • Feedback

  3. Practicing Your Values and Principles • “Values that form the basis for authentic leadership are derived from your beliefs and convictions, but you will not know what your true values are until they are tested under pressure.” • Jon Huntsman founder and chairman of Huntsman Corporation. • Worked for Nixon Administration in 1972, shortly before Watergate. • Chief of staff H.R Haldeman wanted Huntsman to entrap a California Congressman for employing undocumented workers. He asked Huntsman to place some of his workers in an undercover sting in Haldeman’s plant. • Huntsman said no because it went against his values and principles. • He Said no to the 2nd most powerful person in the country, but ended up leaving within the next 6 months anyways

  4. Balancing Your Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivations • 2 Types of Motivation • Extrinsic- People who measure success against outside worlds parameters. People like the recognition and the social status • Intrinsic-People who have a sense of meaning for their life. Ex: “personal growth, helping other people, social causes, and making a difference in the word.” • Debra Dunn, Hewlett-Packard Executive said, “ the only way to avoid getting caught up in materialism is to understand where you find happiness and fulfillment.” • John Thain, CEO of NYSE said “ I am motivated by doing a really good job at whatever I am doing, but I prefer to multiply my impact on society through a group of people. • Ann Moore the Chairman & CEO of Time “ had a dozen job offers after business school, but took the lowest paying one with Time because of her passion for publishing.”

  5. Support Teams • Leaders cannot succeed by themselves • Every effective leader has an even more effective support team • Support teams help leaders stay on course

  6. Why have a Support Team? • Provide Affirmation • Advice • Perspective • Suggest Corrections

  7. Support Teams Consists of... • Spouses • Family • Colleagues • Mentors
