Charles Drew • An awesome athlete but decided to become a doctor • Was one of the first doctors to study blood and plasma • Discovered that blood and plasma could be stored safely and opened the first blood bank – also created the ‘Red Cross Blood Bank’
Mario Molina • Researched chloroflurocarbons (CFC’s) and discovered that CFC’s damaged our atmosphere – the ozone layer • His research led to the CFC ban in most countries to help the environment • Won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1995
Ellen Ochoa • First Hispanic woman in space – started space missions in 1991 • Has spent over 900 hours in space • Received many awards of recognition from NASA
George Washington Carver • Born into slavery • Received two degrees in agriculture • Revolutionized agriculture by introducing peanuts and soybeans to southern crops (restored nitrogen and kept soil healthy) • Found over 300 uses for peanuts
Rebecca Cole • 2ns black woman to graduate from medical school • Joined Elizabeth Blackwell in helping to teach hygiene and childcare to families in poor neighborhoods
Elizabeth Blackwell • First woman to graduate from medical school in 1849 • The students and staff at Geneva Medical College thought she was joking and admitted her as a joke • Later founded the London School of Medicine for Women
Rosalind Franklin • Became a physical chemist • While working at King’s College in England, she discovered the helix shape of DNA • Her work was eventually used by Watson and Crick, who were credited with the discovery of DNA – Franklin received no credit
