What is a poem? • Definitions: • A piece of writing that resembles both speech and song, and that is usually rhythmical and metaphorical. • An arrangement of words containing meaning and musicality. Often used for emphasis, expression, or clarity. Examples: - Songs, plays, etc…
What types of poems are there? • Acrostic • Concrete (shape) • Haiku • Sonnet • Ballad • Limerick • Quatrain • Imagery • & Many more!
Poetic Terms/Figurative Language • What is Figurative Language? • The use of a word (or words) that is separate from its usual (literal) meaning • Words that go beyond their normal meaning.
Simile • Compares two things using “like” or “as” • Examples: • Her eyes sparkled like the night sky. • He was as cool as a cucumber.
Metaphor • Compares two unlike things directly, NOT using like or as. • Examples: • Her eyes ARE the night sky. • The clouds were puffs of cotton in the sky.
Personification • When an idea, object, or animal is given human characteristics. • Example: • The sun’s rays kissed my pale face.
Onomatopoeia • Words that imitate sounds. • Examples: • Boom, CRASH!, Pow, Ding Dong!
Alliteration • When two or more words together begin with the same letter or sound. • Examples: • Ben slept with his baby blanket. • Alice ate an apple.
Assonance • The repetition of vowel sounds in two or more words (creates internal rhyme). • Example: • I heard the uncertain rustling of purple curtains.
Symbolism • Representing things by symbols or attributing meanings with significant objects, events, etc. • Example: • Red can symbolize anger, blood, passion… • Eagle represents freedom/U.S.
Oxymoron • Words or phrases that are combined that contradict or disagree with each other. • Examples: • Black light, Pretty ugly, Jumbo shrimp, etc…
Hyperbole • An exaggeration or overstatement for effect/to emphasize a point. • Example: • I worked a million times harder today! • That giraffe was as tall as the CN Tower!
Imagery (5 types) • 1. Visual • Language that appeals to your SIGHT • E.g. The mighty oak with its rugged branches… • 2. Auditory • Language that appeals to your HEARING • E.g. The waves were gently lapping the shore, whispering… • 3. Olfactory • Language that appeals to your SMELL • E.g. Grandma’s freshly baked bread was calling out to me…
