Pastor Reid Matthias Interviewed by Lara Yasmin Zischke
Hi Pastor Reid Hi I have a couple of questions to ask you. Cool. Thank you. That’s ok. When did you move to Australia? We moved February 17 2011. Do you know how I remember that? We moved the day after Valentines Day which is a big day in the U.S. Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day in Australia? Yeah, kind of. Why did you make the decision to migrate to Australia? Christine, my wife and I lived in the USA together for 15 years where I come from. We decided to move to Australia because that is where she comes from and where her family is. We moved to this area because I work in the Church and I wanted to work with children and this is what was available.
How did you feel when you were coming to Australia? Very nervous because we didn’t know anyone in this area. I was 9000 miles away from my home and the people I know and it was scary. If you returned to the USA what would you miss the most about Australia? If I returned by myself or with my family? With your family. What I’d really miss is the people and the beach. But it would depend on which part of the USA I returned to. If it was Hawaii then I’d have a beach. What did you think Australia was going to be like? I thought it was going to be the same as where I came from. Where I came from was a farming area. The people talk the same but you guys have a funny accent. You have some different words for some things. How is Australia different to the USA? Well they are about the same size physically but there are about 280 million more people living in the USA than in Australia. The population in the USA is over 300 million people. In Australia there is over 20 million people. So there is a lot more
people living in the USA. There are a lot of small towns. Some of the other things that are different are the schools. When something is on at the school the whole town comes, if there is a game on the whole town comes to the game. And that doesn’t happen so much over here. What are some of the different cultures between Australia and America? They are pretty similar. They have the same food and the same language. The Australian’s are more relaxed. What are your favourite memories of the USA? The snow, the cold and having the fire place going. I loved the fall, all the leaves falling. The fresh water lakes. I miss family and friends. Apart from the winter it was always green where I came from and the mountains were a little different to over here. Are you an Australian citizen now and if so why did you choose to make the decision? No, I’m not because I haven’t been living in Australia for long enough to be an Australian citizen.
Do you think you will spend the rest of your life in Australia or do you think you will return to America one day? Well that depends on when I’m going to die. Haha. We will always go back and forth. We may move back or we may live in Denmark, we may live in China. I don’t know what we will do. My family likes to travel but we will be here for a long time. And this is the last question. What things do you wish you could have brought with you to Australia? My family, my home and maybe my snow sled for good times sake. Thank you Pastor Reid for letting me interview you I really appreciate it. That’s fine and thank you for asking. Thanks.
