MIPv6 Lone Home Binding draft-laganier-mext-lone-home-binding-00 J. Laganier, G. Giaretta MEXT WG / IETF-78 / Maastricht, NL July 26th 2010
Home Binding • Introduced by RFC 5648 • Multiple Care-of Address Registrations • Allows simultaneous Home and Visited Link operation • Specification somehow implying that Home Binding can’t exist alone • "Returning Home: Simultaneous Home and Visited Link Operation"
Issue with Capability Detection • MN does initial attach on home link • MN doesn’t know if HA supports Flow Bindings and/or Multiple Care-ofs • HA actually does NOT support those • Visited link becomes available (e.g. WiFi) • MN wants to start operate simultaneous Home and Visited links • Sends a BU to register both Home Binding and Visited Binding to HA • HA doesn’t understand the concept of Multiple Registrations (BIDs) and ignores these options • As a result regular single binding on Visited is created. • Home Link can’t be used anymore
Solution • Having a Home Binding alone isn’t really disallowed • Specification just unclear • Clarifies that Lone Home Binding is allowed • Previous issue can be avoided: • At initial attach, MN tries to creates lone home binding by sending BU with FID and/or BID • If HA doesn’t support Flow Binding and/or MCoA, will ignore FID and/or BID, and will reply with a corresponding Back • MN notices that FID and/or BID option were ignored by HA
