For Dying Coffee Filters Mrs. Rooney’s Preschool Class At The JMU Young Children’s Program
On March 1st, 2012Mrs. Rooney’s preschoolers: • Created artwork using food coloring and coffee filters. • Discussed different colors and made predictions about adding water to their artwork. • Used familiar tools from home, food coloring bottles, to expand their creativity in art and practice controlling such tools. • Displayed completed artwork on the window for all to see.
“Do you know what these are?” “Food coloring! I have that at home.” - D
Students in Mrs. Rooney’s class used food coloring to dye coffee filters.
Students dripped colors and water onto their coffee filters. “What colorsdo you see?” “Red, blue, black, yellow, and green!” - M
Students used a pincer grasp. “Only 1 drop of each color. Squeeze very gently. Okay… stop! Now let’s use a new color in a new area.”
Sometimes we used a lot of food coloring. Our artwork was very creative! “I’m making a rainbow!” - C
“What will happen if we drip water on our colors?” “It will get wet.” – C “It will be on the plate!” – S “WOW!”– M “It will get black.” - D “It is mixing!” – D “It will change colors.” – E “A design!” – P “They are mixing together!” - C
“It looks weird!” – R “It’s spreading!” - R
the students’ artwork! After they dried, we displayed
