ECTS • European Credit Transfer System • Raising well educated manpower: • cycles = skilled workers, graduate professionals (Bachelor program), scientists (Master program) • Comparable degrees • Credit points • 30 hours of study = lessons and home study (here: 14 lessons = 1 credit point) • Quantity of work, not quality – given if the grade is min. 2 (satisfactory) • Suggested curriculum: 30 ± 3 credits / semester (GM 360 / 12 semesters, D 300/10) • Overally collected number of credit points show the progress in studies • A subject can be booked only 3 times (no completion at the 3rd: dismissal) • 300credit pointsare needed for dentistry degree, 360 are for Gen. ECTS at PTE MS • Credit system in medical training programs • old system: „credit courses” – this is not new • undivided program (Master’s degree) • different curriculum versions (year: 2003 + 2004 + 2005: v02, year 2006) • courses based on each other (prerequisites) + high percentage of practices → if you fail a subject, it is hard to keep up with the original schedule • 15 final exams max. • courses can be completed once (retake only on failure) • a „upgrading exam” chance is only available in the same exam period • max. 3 prerequisite subjects (elective cannot be a prereq. for an obligatory) FAQ March …, 2007 The Credit System

Subject descriptions • Director + department • Type: obligatory (Basic, Preclinical, Clinical, Rotation modules), elective, optional or crit. req. • Type of classes: lectures, practices, seminars • A short description and a recommendation about the subject • Credit points allocated: 14 hrs → 1 credit • Prerequisite subjects or modules(max. 3, elective or optional cannot be prer. for an obligatory) • Exact schedule (which week, how many hours, what type of class, what is the topic, who is the lecturer) • Achievement (how the course/subject ends?) • Absences, whatever else is needed to get the signature, exam questions, • method of counting the grade etc. • Subject code FAQ March …, 2007 The Credit System

Signature: you completed all the tasks prescribed for the course (e.g. took the tests, etc) and attended enough classes If signature is OK criterion requirement: nothing else is needed elective or optional subject (or some obligatories): ends with mid-semester grade. That means that your achievement during the instruction period will be tested (method is given for the course at the beginning of the semester – usually in the subject description – at least 2 orals or tests) and you’ll be given a grade on the last day of the instruction period. This is not an exemption nor an exam. If you failed to fulfill a requirement you can be given 2 weeks from the end of the instruction period to make it up. obligatory subject: usually ends with (semester) exam or final exam. An exam can be taken only in the exam period by booking exam date in the ETR. You can have 3 exam chances (A, B, C) in an exam period (plus one D chance upon the law of equity only once in your studies) – if you can find a spot for yourself.   13. Booking courses You book a course: lectures and practices and seminars at once: one signature and one grade is given. You book courses(time and place and spots in the timetable) - by attending a course and (completing the exam) you complete a subject or crit. req. in your suggested curriculum. course ≠ subject or crit. req. E.g. crit. req. is Physical Education 1. - course is Kick boxing on Wednesdays at 10.00 A course can be available for many majors (then usually the majors will share the number of spots given). You can attend a course and get the credit point (take exam) only if you booked it in the ETR. A subject can be booked only 3 times in your studies (elective and optional ones as well!!). Completing a subject You have a subject or crit. req. in your curriculum you have to / want to complete A course is offered in the ETR in a semester with which you can complete the subject / crit. req. If the prerequisites are completed, the schedule is OK for you and there is a spot for you you book the course If you complete the tasks and attend enough classes a signature will be given Your subject or crit. req. is completed If it is needed in the curriculum, you get a grade(as a midsemester grade upon your achievements during the instruction period or as an exam grade in the exam period) - with the grade you get the credit point  FAQ March …, 2007 The Credit System

Exams, final exams (Semester) exams / Final exams -only in exam period Spots and dates: agreement with the Department, spots are usually givenin common for different majors, name of examiner is not known in advance Application for exams: individually on the ETR Gradebook can be released if you owe nothing (tuition fee, delay fees) Signatures: you attended enough classes: you are allowed to take the exam (if any) Deadlines for booking: 2 working days before for cancelling, 1 working days before for booking, always until 9.00 o’clock Next chance: when the Dept. has entered the grade for the previous chance 3 exam chances/subject in one semester (if you can find an available spot) A / B / C chances, absences (justified absence), Dean’s chance (D exam) FAQ March …, 2007 The Credit System

  17. Before the exam period After the booking period the RO creates a list for every students with their subjects. The student signs the list admitting that this what he/she booked in the ETR – no changes afterwards! The student copies the list into the gradebook (every semester starts on a new page). The RO files this paper. In case of argument this paper will be the proof that everyone can rely on. The Registrar signs on the left side of the gradebook (last page of that semester) admitting that the student booked these courses. The gradebook can be released for the exam period only if the student has paid all his fees and showed the residency permit/visa and the address card. FAQ March …, 2007 The Credit System

  18. After the exam period The RO collects gradebook (return gradebook after your last exam, not later than the last day of the exam period!) It’s your obligation to have every signatures and grades (except for absences) written in the gradebook in the exam period. We compare grades recorded in the ETR by the lecturers and those written in the gradebook. Then the semester is closed with an average. The content of the gradebook is recorded (written) in the registry book. The average and the number of credits collected in the semesterare written in to the gradebook (right side bottom) and the Vice-Dean of Education signs the gradebook.
