LTE – TA + AoA Positioning • Approximate arc depth: • 120m+, if terminal > ~19.5 Km from cell antenna • 45m-90m, if terminal <=~19.5 Km from cell antenna • Antenna angular resolution is up to 0.5 degrees, so with actual angular resolution of ~3 times best resolution (assumption) then arc width will be: • 780m at 30 Km from cell antenna • 390m at 15 Km from cell antenna • 39m at 1.5 Km from cell antenna(in practice, NLOS ~160m) Sector Cell Serving Cell Area Estimated Elliptical or Arc Area AoA position vector with vector error Estimated TA Arc
Factors Impacting the AccuracyOverview • Cell Size (Cell Density) • Very strong correlation between cell size and accuracy • Quality of Cell Input Data, e.g. • Correctness of cell tower coordinates • Correctness of cell azimuth data • Location Method Used • Enhanced CGI significantly better than CGI only • (A-GPS significantly better than E-CGI, but dependency to coverage and terminal support) • 3G more accurate than 2G (for the same cell size) • Accuracy of the RTT value: taken to be approximately +/- 60 meters • Accuracy of the TA value: taken to be ~550m

Pros and Cons of E-CID • No terminal dependency • Medium accuracy, better than CGI-only • Works indoor and out • Works in urban canyons • Accuracy still low in rural areas – significantly less than A-GPS or OTDOA • High dependency on Operator network data
