  3. National Convention Radicals in the Assembly called for the election of a legislative body called the National Convention - suffrage (the right to vote) would be extended to all male citizens 1. Convention voted to abolish the monarchy. 2. Declare France a republic. 3. Seize lands of nobles, abolish tithes of nobility 4. Committee of Public Safety- Dealt with threats to France, tried to save the Revolution.

  4. Robespierre “The Incorruptible” 1. Lawyer & politician (Jacobin) 2. Leader of Committee of Public Safety 3. Liberty could not be secured without TERROR.

  5. REIGN OF TERROR • July 1793- July 1794 • Hasty trials for those suspected of being against the REVOLUTION. • 40,000 put to death through use of GUILLITONE. • National Con. Turns against C.P.S, executes Robespierre

  6. The Directory • -Created as a reaction to the Reign of Terror • Created THIRD Constitution and set up new government (The Directory). • Set-Up • Five man directory • Two- House Legislature elected by men of property. • Relatively WEAK
