Angelica Kauffman was born in Switzerland and trained in Italy. She was a student of Sr. Joshua Reynolds and an interior decorator of many houses. Her painting Cornelia Presenting Her Children as Her Treasures, or Mother of the Gracchi was a kind of set piece of Neoclassicism. She identified herself as a history painter, an unusual designation for a women in the 18th century. Kauffman’s popularity may have declined due to her unfortunate marriage. She married Antonio Zucchi in 1781. In 1773, she was appointed by the Academy with others to decorate St. Paul’s Cathedral, a scheme that was never carried out. 3. 2. 1.
1. Cornelia Presenting Her Children as Her Treasures, or Mother of the Gracchi shows classical antiquity with the drapery of the linen of all five figures. This painting also uses chiaroscuro with the shadowing of figures. The haziness of the landscape in the back of this painting represents atmospheric perspective. 2.The Self Portrait, the Artist Hesitating Between the Arts of Music and Painting uses a medium of oil on canvas. The painting uses primary colors to portray the three female figures. Also, the figures are spaced evenly so the painting has a sense of flow. 3. This painting is A Portrait of the Duca di Chiesi. This medium is oil on canvas. This portrait pays close attention to detail. The color of his skin and his undershirt are pale colors which contrasts with the darker background and jacket.
