  2. A lot can change in 50 years… • What are some changes that have occurred in the United States in the last 50 years?

  3. SW Asia has seen dramatic changes…

  4. Dubai One of seven statesthat make up the United Arab Emirates. Fifty years ago, it was a small town that had only recently introduced electricity. Bedouin nomads roamed the desert nearby. Today, Dubai is a modern city with one o f the world’s largest man-made harbors.

  5. What could cause this type of transformation in such a short time? Black Gold…oil

NATURAL RESOURCES • SW Asia has the world’s largest known • oil reserves(unused oil that remains • underground). • There are also large reserves of natural gas (gas within the Earth’s crust). • Money from the sale of oil and natural gas has been used for projects such as paving roads, constructing modern buildings, and providing medical care.

  7. How might having a valuable natural resource affect a region? Essential Question:

The Geographic Setting • More than half of the world’s proven crude oil reserves lie under SW Asia. • Crude oil is another name for petroleum as it is found in the ground. • Proven crude oil reserves are known deposits that can be pumped to the surface at a reasonable cost. • Developed countries depend on these fuels to meet most of their energy needs. Oil and gas are used for transportation, to run power plants, and to create goods such as plasticsand medicines.

  9. Nonrenewable vs. Renewable • There is a limited amount of oil. • Once it is used up, it can’t be replaced. • Sunlight, wind, and geothermal energy are resources that will not run out. • Waterpower and trees are also renewable resources.
