First steps… • Internet search: wikipedia, images, numerous web sites, blogs, online bookstores etc • Library: 305.3 Gender Studies, 300 Culture and Media Studies and 760 Graphic Design • Online journals • Own leads eg: Guerilla Girls
What did I discover? • TMI! • Gender studies: 3 shelves of books in library • Graphic Design: whole section in library • Design and spaces came up a lot on the internet • Two names began to emerge: Judy Chicago and Barbara Kruger • Huge emphasis on cultural and political imagery with use of strong bold messages • A clear historical framework: 60s and 70s
Narrowing my research field • Structure? Systems? Working practices? • Identify the era: 70s to early 80s • Identify the country: USA • What theme? Emergence? Impact? Influence? Significance? • Choose 2 artists: Chicago and Kruger
Developing a research plan • Identify background reading • Identify key texts by working from recommended reading, advice from library staff, references in background reading etc • 3 books, 2 journal articles, 2 internet sites, 1 or 2 primary sources, images • Make a timed action plan
Writing the essay • Introduction 100 • Historical/cultural context 200 • Chicago - description of working practices 200 • Kruger - description of working practices 200 • Discussion/analysis of the significance of their work 400 • Relate to graphic design practice as it developed through the 70s and early 80s 300 • Conclusion - can their influence/significance still be felt today? 200
