New Mission Statement • Collegiate Cycling is team-oriented bicycle racing for women and men of all abilities.
We are focused on: • Providing new riders with a welcoming introduction to the Collegiate Cycling family; • Enabling elite riders to pursue an education while benefiting from development opportunities that integrate with amateur and professional teams and national development programs; • Creating personal growth and leadership development opportunities for scholar athletes both on and off the bike; and • Ensuring that the sport we love is low cost and accessible to any student who wants to race a bike.
Why “Intro?” You’re never ready for your first bike race Rider education is critical for our members “Introduction to Bicycle Racing” is a carefully chosen name Intro riders contribute to the team’s success FEEL THE LOVE, BABY!
How does it work? 2-5 minutes of start line instruction/demo 5-6 laps or 7-8 miles of practice/coaching Line them up and they race with coaches helping from the sidelines One “head coach” (should be licensed) Many “assistants” – riders, other coaches or team leaders
What do we need? “Intro Champion” to administer program Engaged promoters who are interested Getting the word out Syllabus of proposed intro topics It’s a valuable sales tool for team leaders Marketing it to college students (not just collegiate cyclists)
Challenges Time in the race-day schedule Finding enough volunteers Resistance to the concept Risk management issues Marketing the program
What’s Next • Nationwide “Introduction To Bicycle Racing” rollout across 10 conferences • Publication of supporting materials • Plugging into licensed coaches • Incentives & continuing education credits • Working closer with LAs to implement • Bringing “Intro” to a wider audience
