Verbs. Verb:. A part of speech that expresses action or state of being. . Identify verbs…. An easy way to identify verbs is to first identify the subject of each sentence. Subject is the ‘Who?’ or ‘What?’ of the sentence. The skunk ran away. What ran away?

  2. Verb: • A part of speech that expresses action or state of being.

  3. Identify verbs… • An easy way to identify verbs is to first identify the subject of each sentence. • Subject is the ‘Who?’ or ‘What?’ of the sentence. • The skunk ran away. What ran away? • Jasper gasped in fear. Who gasped?

  4. The launch of the shuttle attracted attention. What attracted attention? • The children of the world need food and medicine. Who needs food and medicine? • The house on the hill is where my grandfather grew up. Where is it that grandfather grew up? • **So, when in doubt of the verb…check for the subject…it will help!

  5. Action Verbs

  6. Two types of action verbs: • Physical: expresses physical actions, such as shout, walk, carry, run, skip, laugh, paint, arrive, etc. **Indicate movement. • Mental: expresses mental activities, such as memorize, think, love and forget. **Indicate thought, feelings and other mental processes.

  8. Helping Verbs • Helps the main verb express action or state of being. • When put together, they make up a verb phrase.

  10. “Do” and “Have” verbs • Do • Does • Did • Had • Has • Have

  11. Other Helping Verbs • Can • Could • May • Might • Must • Shall • Should • Will • Would

  12. He will conduct the orchestra. • She can see where the house will be built.

  13. Linking Verbs • Connects the subject to a word or word group that describes the subject. • Dan is one of the finalists. • Marie Curie became a famous scientist. • The watermelon looks ripe.

  14. “Being” verbs • Am • Are • Be • Been • Being • Is • Was • Were

  15. Other Linking Verbs • Appear • Become • Feel • Grow • Look remain • Sound • Seem • Smell • Stay • Taste Etc.

  16. Edgar Allan Poe was a writer of poems and frightening short stories. (Linking Verb—Links Edgar Allan Poe with a description that tells more about him) • Edgar Allan Poe wrote poems and frightening short stories. (Action verb—tells what he DID)

  17. Review: Find the verbs! When Betty and Mike arrived at Lagoon, they decided to ride the rollercoaster. Betty’s heart raced while she waited in line. Mike whispered encouragement. When it was her turn, she screamed and laughed through the entire ride. “That was awesome!” she shouted. “I see why everyone loves this ride!” 11 verbs

  18. Find the verbs: Bob worked as a detective in New York City. He drove up and down the streets each night, looking for anything suspicious. One night, he heard a child crying. He stopped his car, got out, and followed the sound. He found a young child who was lost. Bob helped the child and located the worried parents. Bob felt happy to see such a good ending to the night. • 14 verbs
