Identify verbs… • An easy way to identify verbs is to first identify the subject of each sentence. • Subject is the ‘Who?’ or ‘What?’ of the sentence. • The skunk ran away. What ran away? • Jasper gasped in fear. Who gasped?
The launch of the shuttle attracted attention. What attracted attention? • The children of the world need food and medicine. Who needs food and medicine? • The house on the hill is where my grandfather grew up. Where is it that grandfather grew up? • **So, when in doubt of the verb…check for the subject…it will help!
Two types of action verbs: • Physical: expresses physical actions, such as shout, walk, carry, run, skip, laugh, paint, arrive, etc. **Indicate movement. • Mental: expresses mental activities, such as memorize, think, love and forget. **Indicate thought, feelings and other mental processes.

Helping Verbs • Helps the main verb express action or state of being. • When put together, they make up a verb phrase.
