Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 A Critique by Avi Goldstein
Welcome to the Game Released September 15, 2009 Developed by Vicarious Visions, N-Space, and Savage Entertainment Published by Activision Action RPG Sequel to MUA 7.3/10 on Metacritic
Plot Marvel Storylines: Secret War and Civil War Driven by cut-scenes Pros: replay value, attractive to Marvel fans, experience the story Cons: plays out more like a movie, little character development, list of objectives
Characters 30+ Upgrade Picking Sides Pros: One of the coolest parts of the game, extends possibilities for gameplay Cons: Lack of character development, customizability
Fusion Defining characteristic of the game Fusion Stars Pros: Aesthetics, power, encourages co-op, discovering all possible fusions Cons: Limited, repeated patterns Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUX8pf9moNY
Gameplay Display Fast, action-packed, beat ‘em up Pros: pretty rapid and high intensity, keeps you focused in the game, fun Focus on upgrades- collecting orbs, talking to characters Cons: Can get monotonous, not really any strategy to attacking, just mash those buttons Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDeVFudET-c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsZ1NUI-AA4
Co-op Play Pros: Offline Cons: Online
Sound and Graphics Soundtrack: very similar to that of the recent Marvel movies, grand, epic, and orchestral, helps create the environment, although can do without Graphics: Improved very much from predecessor, fusion attacks look marvelous, cut-scenes are well animated, loading screens are cool superhero art
Marketing and Sales Was in top 10 for sales for a bit in 2009
Verdict Overall, a great game, good graphics, interesting story, repetitive but fun gameplay, good for relaxing and having a good time Not huge difference in gameplay compared to its predecessor, little character development relevant to the plot PSP Long loading time, mission ambiguity, easy to leave For the PSP, 6.5-7/10
