  1. Youth Baseball Learning the Proper Techniques

  2. We will learn about the 5 components of batting

  3. 1) Batting Stance How to stand at the plate? • While at the plate, your legs should be a little wider than your shoulders • Toes should be slightly pigeon-toed • Knees are bent and angled slightly in toward each other • Knees are close to each other and ankles spread apart • Weight is centered on inside foot

  4. 2 ) Grip • Middle knuckles are aligned on the bat • Have the fingers lay across the callus line • With this grip, you will attain the quickness necessary to hit the ball

  5. 3) Hand Placement & Bat Angle • Hands are aligned • Bat is at the same height as the rear of the shoulder • Rear elbow should be pointed down at 45 degree angle • Front elbow is down and even with the back elbow • Hold the bat at 45 degree angle • Knob of the bat points to the opposite batter’s box

  6. 4) Inward Turn and Stride Start the swing by first moving back and then going forward Move the shoulder, hip and knee inward at around 3 inches You will gain strength, speed and quickness and also be able to time the pitch The back foot should turn at a 45 degree angle and should land lightly on the inside of the big toe During the stride, rotate your hip Have your body weight remain balanced without leaning forward or backward

  7. 5) The Swing Head turned to pitcher & square to the ground Eyes focused on pitcher Begins from waist down

  8. We will now learn the two proper ways of throwing and catching

  9. 1) Catching the Baseball (Do Not Do This) Catch the baseball at the center of the body Use two hands to prevent the ball from popping out of the glove and allowing for quick access to throw Fingers up when ball is above belly button and fingers down when baseball is below belly button It is important to work on line drives, ground balls, pop ups, and short hops

  10. 2) Throwing the Baseball • Stretch arm before • Have front of glove and shoulders point at the target • Step toward the target • Have the arm bent at the elbow and above the shoulder • Throw over top to increase strength, velocity, and accuracy. This also prevents injury • Do not sling it, push it or side arm it

  11. Pitching You will now learn how to pitch!

  12. The 5 Step Process to Effective Pitching Step 1 : While both feet are pointed to the target, the pitcher will make a rocker step 4-6 inches to the side or to the front of the rubber Step 2 : The pivot foot will start out next to the rubber and face the target. The weight gets transferred from the stride foot to the pivot. The stride foot raises and the knee of the pivot leg bends. The pivot leg straightens and the stride foot points in the direction of the throw. The knee of the stride leg is bent when it lands Step 3 : When the leg is lifted up, make sure to be balanced Step 4 : Use your arm and body to wind up and release your pitch Step 5 : Lastly, follow through and make sure to extend to the plate and finish low

  13. Basic Pitching Grips 4- Seam Fastball : Hold the index & middle fingers across the horseshoe of the baseball and the thumb at the bottom. Held with the tips of the fingers Change Up : Hold the index fingertipagainst the thumb tip and hold the ball with the palm. Release with a stiff wrist Curveball : Hold the index finger and middle finger together across the widest seams. Do not touch with the palm. When throwing, keep the wrist cocked and toward body. Before you release, snap your wrist with the back of the hand facing the batter. Slider : Have the middle & index fingers across the widest seams. The fingers should be placed off the center and to the side of the ball. The thumb is tucked under and the ring and pinky are off to the side. Keep the wrist loose.

  14. We will now go over the correct way to field • A very good defensive stance is where the feet are slightly wider than the shoulders • As the pitch is delivered, the fielder should take a step forward and always expect the ball will be hit to them • When stepping forward, the fielder should bend at the waist • One should lower his or her glove to the ground and have their palm open • One should evenly distribute his or her weight in case they have to go left or right
