GOES-R Air Quality Proving Ground (AQPG) Overview Shobha Kondragunta, NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) Chair, GOES-R Aerosols/Air Quality/Atmospheric Chemistry Application Team
What is AQPG? Day 1 user readiness: purpose of AQPG is to ensure that user community is ready for GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) air quality products immediately after launch
ABI Air Quality Products • Aerosol detection (smoke/dust) • Aerosol optical depth • Aerosol particle size • Total ozone • Fire hot spots and characterization • Aerosol and trace gas emissions • Visibility AQ team – Build 1 Land team – Build 1 AQ team – Build 2 AQ/Aviation team – Tailored product AQ team – Tailored product
Inputs from AQPG Team • D. Byun, NOAA/OAR/ARL - Collaborator • S. Christopher, UAH – Co-PI • P. Dickerson, EPA - Advisor • R. Hoff, UMBC – Co-PI • S. Kondragunta, NOAA/NESDIS – Project coordinator • F. Moshary, CCNY – Co-I • B. Pierce, NOAA/NESDIS – Co-I • J. Szykman, EPA - Collaborator
User Community and Focus Group • National Weather Service/National Center for Environmental Prediction • Environmental Protection Agency • State and local environmental agencies • Weather Forecasting Offices • Federal Aviation Administration • United States Department of Agriculture/United States Forest Service • State and local air quality forecasters
FY09 Activities • Task 1:Kickoff meeting in August 2009 • Task 2: Satellite imagery for different air quality events • Task 3: Generation of GOES-R ABI proxy data • Task 4: First AQPG workshop
Task 1: Kickoff Meeting • Kickoff meeting in UMBC in August/September 2009. New hire is expected to be onboard to organize the workshop • Meeting output expected to be: • Goals • Guidance and timelines for the activities of the new hire and user group • Specific target dates for presentation of air quality event cases to the user group
Task 2: Satellite Imagery • UMBC new hire will coordinate with different instrumented sites and the user group to compile and distribute MODIS and GOES imagery • Telecon meeting with users to discuss the imagery interpretation and usefulness for air quality forecasters • Obtain feedback from users on visualization tools and data formats for GOES-R products
Task 3: GOES-R ABI Proxy Data • STAR contractor will run GOES-R ABI simulator to generate proxy radiance data for air quality events picked • STAR contractor will run ABI retrieval algorithm on the proxy radiance data • STAR/CIMSS will run high resolution WRF-CHEM model and generate ABI proxy data • STAR contractor will run ABI retrieval algorithm on the proxy radiance data • GOES-R ABI retrievals from 15-minutes will be interpreted to 5-minute imagery/products
Task 4: First AQPG Workshop • First AQPG workshop will be held at UMBC in August 2010 • Interactive discussion with members of user/focus group to obtain feedback on ABI products/imagery • Future AQPG activities will be highlighted
STAR UMBC EPA Workplan for First Year Activities Compile satellite data for different air quality events • Develop imagery display tools for these products • STAR will generate ABI proxy data for these events • STAR will run ABI algorithms for these test cases • Present test cases and ABI products/imagery to user group • Compile feedback and make any changes needed to the tools Workshop Test applications
