World Axe Throwing Leagues starting in Mississauga and other cities Bad Axe Throwing creates new global initiative Alex Ramirez, axe master of Bad Axe Throwing, one of 20 sites that will host World Axe Throwing League championship qualifiers beginning in October. - Bryon Johnson/Metroland Alex Ramirez says he can throw three things: punches, kicks and axes. He has plenty of experience with the first two through 18 years as a martial arts instructor while the last item he picked up about a year ago at Bad Axe Throwing in Mississauga. “Much like any sport or activity, it’s easy to pick up,” said Ramirez, now axe master (chief instructor) at the Tomken Road facility. “It’s not specific to any type of people. Anybody can pick it up and flourish with it.”

  2. He hopes to see an average Joe become a world champion at axe throwing now that World Axe Throwing Leagues are set to begin out of 20 facilities worldwide, including the Mississauga location. More than 1,000 participants are expected to compete in qualifiers for eight weeks, beginning Oct. 9 while four countries (Canada, the United States, Brazil and Ireland) will be represented. Winners out of each of the 20 facilities will move on to the finals in Chicago in early December. Bad Axe Throwing has created this initiatives, but there are some facilities outside of the Bad Axe umbrella that are eligible to compete in the World Axe Throwing League. “They’ve all taken our global standardizations for axe throwing as far as competitive goes,” said Ramirez. Axe throwing has grown into a popular activity normally reserved for birthday and Christmas parties as well as other social gatherings. However, Ramirez believes it can be a legitimate sport and he hopes the creation of the World Axe Throwing League will lead into an eventual inclusion in the Olympics. “Aside from it being a recreational activity, there’s a lot of leagues involved when our leagues do start,” he said. “Much like any sport, there’s practices and training, so it can definitely be an international affiliated sport.” Participants can sign up for $15 a week and be eligible for the $3,500 grand prize awarded to the world champion.
