SPS BLMs for LSS2/TT20 Overview: IC detector and acquisition layout Space for additional IC detectors Acquisition system Diamond BLM TT20 (LSS2) Upgrade plans Conclusions and outlook Slides prepared with Ewald Effinger BI/BL BLMs for SLAWG
IC Detector and acquisition layout Two front-ends: • cfv-ba2-bld: ZS1 -> QNLF211600 (hardware interlock (16 channels) ~1usec reaction time) • cfv-ba80-blr: MDLV211631 -> MDLV240209 (software interlock ~20msec reaction time) BLMs for SLAWG
IC Detector and spare channels (MAX = 36) TT20 – 25 spare channels(software interlock) LSS2 – 10 spare channels (software interlock) Blue = hardware interlock Red = software interlock 10 spare SPS IC’s Cables to be checked/installed BLMs for SLAWG
IC Beam loss acquisition Signals sampled (analogue integration) • At 50Hz during beam-in (cycle losses with interlock): • Start: SX.ACQW20 (20 msec before 1st SPS injection) • Stop: SX.G-ACQ + 10msec (10 msec after beam-out) Data provided: • Integrated loss per channel • Individual samples spaced by 20msec 2. During Fast extraction process: • Start: SEX.F-W20 (20 msec before extraction) • Stop: SEM.F-AMC + 20msec (20 msec after extraction) Data provided: • integrated loss per channel 3. During beam-out (ambient losses): • Start: SX.G-ACQ-CT + 10msec • Stop: SX.ACQF900 (900msec before injection) Data provided: • integrated loss per channel BLMs for SLAWG
Typical losses in LSS2 (SFTPRO2) – 2E13 protons • Integrated loss ~3.5 Gray • Scale applied: 1bit = 530 uGy • Electronics saturation: ~1 Gy BLMs for SLAWG
Typical losses TT20 (SFTPRO2) – 2E13 protons • Integrated loss ~2.5 Gray • Scale applied: 1bit = 1 mGy • Electronics saturation: ~2 Gy BLMs for SLAWG
Diamond BLM (fast acquisition for spill) • Single detector installed upstream of TT20 dump (requested by T. Bohl for spill quality measurements) • Presently read-out with oscilloscope (expert use) • Could be made into operational system for OP use • Select acquisition window from start of slow extraction • No known request for additional diamonds in LSS2 BLMs for SLAWG
Upgrade plans Electronics: • No plans for general upgrade of SPS BLM electronics before LS3 • Request for limited number of channels (LSS1/LSS5) with turn-by-turn acquisition Software: • FESA2->FESA3 migration foreseen between now and LS2 • Make system more reliable and update software BLMs for SLAWG
Conclusions and outlook • LSS2 and TT20 BLMs spread over two acquisition systems (BA2/BA80) • Additional BLMs: • 10 spare IC detectors available • Electronics channels to be connected • Cables must be checked • No upgrade plans for BLM electronics before after LS2 • Software will be migrated to FESA3 • Requests for new functionality welcome BLMs for SLAWG
