Cory Rupp University of Colorado - Boulder Advisors: Marty Dunn Kurt Maute Tailored Energy Flow in Multifunctional Materials and Structures
Problem Statement • Electronic devices fail in harsh environments (high temperature, high shock, radiation, etc.). • Elastic wave guiding heterogeneous materials/structures can overcome this problem. • An efficient methodology is needed to optimally design such devices.
Background • Periodic arrays of materials can guide and control elastic waves. • Frequency dependent phenomenon. • Currently limited to simple non-optimized structures.
Objectives • Verify FEA code currently used for optimization. • Verify that current shape approximation techniques are valid for wave propagation. • Optimally design a multiplexing phononic waveguide. • Compare results with a simple structure design.
