Why Have In-house Clinics Aside From Their Educational Value? • To demonstrate concern for community by providing free legal services • To supplement instruction for specialty tracks • To serve as laboratories for studying law practice and learning to be a lawyer • To provide a place to nurture students who have a commitment to social justice issues

  3. 2007 Law School Survey of Student Engagement • Students who participated in clinical programs reported greater gains in: • Clarifying Career Goals • Learning Effectively on One’s Own • Contributing to the Welfare of the Community • Understanding People of Diverse Backgrounds • Working Effectively with Others

  4. “Necessary” Teaching • Office Procedures • The law, procedures, systems and protocols of practice settings that will be encountered in the clinic • Students’ relationships with instructors • Restrictions instructors place on students’ freedom to act a lawyers

  5. Important Lessons From Supervised Practice • Values, behaviors, attitudes and ethical requirements of a lawyer (professionalism) • Importance of seeking justice and providing access to justice • Reasons for fostering respect for the rule of law • Essentiality of integrity and truthfulness • The need to interact sensitively with diverse clients and colleagues

Important Lessons From Supervised Practice (Cont.) • The value of nurturing quality of life in light of the stresses and time commitments of law practice • Development of positive professional characteristics, such as compassion, respectfulness, and commitment, through providing services to the underrepresented
