INCDTIM Why may we use “Green” Technology in a datacenter especially for Grid?
INCDTIM Green IT • Green use. Reduce the energy consumption of computers and other information systems. • Green disposal. Refurbish and reuse old computers • Green manufacturing. Manufacture of electronic components and other subsystems with minimal or no impact on the environment • Green design. Design energy efficient and environmentally sound computers, servers, and cooling equipment.
INCDTIM ITIM Datacenter dedicated to Grid • Place for max 5 rack’s, total of 200 1U rack mountable computers • To small for our expectation 5 years ago, but good for a start. • No backup solution, no redundancy
INCDTIM We used some of the green IT concepts • Green disposal • less space more computers • good management program, less people, • redundant system • Green use • power economy • using virtual environment on 5 Years old rack mountable computers
INCDTIM Technology and Implementation
Blade technology IBM and HP Blade system, total of 46 Blades in only 29 U Processing power: 368 core Less space for 46 PC => core increase by 56% Less powerconsume reduced by 34% Management -> through web based interfaces MSA Storage capacity: 50 TB, INCDTIM Blade system and MSA storage
Network Layer 3 Switch Cisco 6509E A Layer 3 switch with routing capabilities -> decrease power consume Full redundant system -> increase reliability ITIM – RoEduNet 10 GB 2011 INCDTIM
Backup and monitoring INCDTIM U P S Power generator 275kW APC Netbotz Monitoring System Temperature Humidity Fluid detector Smoke detector Uninterruptible Power Source ~ APC Symetra of max 160 KVA full redundant
Logical Schema of the Datacenter Network Configuration INCDTIM
INCDTIM RO-14-ITIM Resultsfor Atlas in Romania
INCDTIM 17% of CPU time in Romania
INCDTIM What are the Green IT implementations results? • Did we increase the number of Cores in the Datacenter? - Yes • Did we Improve the management condition – Yes • Do we have good redundancy? – Yes • Did we Reduce the power consumption? … Maybe

INCDTIM Conference Invitation • INCDTIM is organizing between the 25-27 October 2012 the Fifth Romania Tier 2 Federation "Grid, Cloud & High Performance Computing Science" - RO-LCG Conference • http://www.itim-cj.ro/rolcg2012 • Under the Regis of: IEEE Romania Section • Full paper submission: 25.07.2012 • Notification of acceptance: 1.09.2012 • Camera ready papers: 15.09.2012
INCDTIM ?Future idea? • We are improving the storage capacity for analyzing ATLAS data in the near future • Virtual implementation • We are looking to improve the middleware. and changing gLite to EMI • Improving the IPv6 link • Working for obtaining new collaboration for the Grid site
