What is a noun? • A noun names a person, place or thing. Many nouns have a singular and a plural form. I ate an apple. I ate two apples. These nouns are called Count Nouns. However, some nouns only have a singular form. These nouns are called Non-Count Nouns.
Count Nouns • Refer to nouns that are easily counted. Example: apple, dog, book, shirt, pen To make these nouns plural you simply add an s. Example: We ate ten apples! Review: s, es, y-ies, foot-feet
Non-Count Nouns • Refers to nouns that cannot logically be counted. Examples: anger, rice, warmth, leisure, education, courage, progress, weather You cannot add an “s” to these nouns or give them a number. Example: We went to the store and bought six rices. Incorrect.
Quantifying Non-Count Nouns • rice—bags of rice • homework--homework assignments • bread--loaves of bread, slices of bread • wine--bottles of wine, glasses of wine • snow--snow storms, snow flakes, snow drifts • dirt--piles of dirt, truckloads of dirt • Or by adding “some” “a lot of” “a little bit of” We bought some rice.
