  8. What makes achievements so hot??? Highlight ourachievements???

Ourexperiencessimply say ”…been there, done that.” (ho……hum) Well, first of all,achievementsdiffer fromexperiences!!!Here’s how: Our achievements, however, say “…been there, done that, and here’s how well I’ve been doing it!” (in terms HR and hiring managers will appreciate and be attracted to!) WOW!!!! In other words, ourachievementsdescribe & quantify successes we’ve already had in doing the same things the target job or environment calls for. OK, then, what’s the point?

  11. OK then, how about defining“achievements”? Here’s how achievements work From your perspective, when you answer an ad or forward your résumé package, you’re offering yourself and your talents for their review. And hopefully, after a successful interview, a reasonable job offer. “...Those talents and quantified performance successes you’ve had which show that you, specifically, have been making outstanding contributions doing the same thing the target company wants done.“ (Bob’s dictionary)

  12. Well, the other side of the table has needs too. Basically, they’re looking for someone they can make money with; someone with a proven track record of success in doing the job(s) they’re hiring for .

  13. Why highlighting yourachievementsclearly & stronglyis a good idea…. (Here are some comments from hiring professionals) “A candidate’s accomplishments are what I sell to my clients.” Executive Recruiter What employers want to know about potential candidates Do you have the related skills….are you good at what you do? Did you contribute in your last job?  Is your work ethic a fit for us? What specific talents do you have that will help us…can you prove it? Are you focused on my job? In plain language, what can you do for us? “We look for sales representatives based on their actual performance achievements with past companies.” SE Region Medical Sales Mgr "I want to know how good the Candidate is at what we want done, and can they do the same for us?" Marketing firm HR Manager “Is the candidate focused on what he wants to do, and has he been successful at it, or is he just looking for something he thinks he can do?” IT Recruiter

  14. OK, then, how are these “achievements” gonna make my résumé stand out fromall these other jokers?

First, let’s look at several random vocational related questions to ask yourself in order tohelp identify & quantify yourachievements Sales Size of the company in estimated sales and numbers of employees? What did you manage or oversee? Territory size, if applicable? Open new markets? Bring in new accounts? Take accounts from competitors? Sales growth in$$,or %and$$? (Warning! % alone is often suspect)

  16. Finding ourachievements Sales Supervise or train employees? How many? Ever win any sales contests or awards? Any of the salespersons you supervised or trained ever win sales contests or awards? Gotcha! Gotcha! Gotcha! www.iworkministry.org

  17. Finding ourachievements Office Administration Size of office staff….type business? Size of business in dollars, clients, territory, etc. ? How many & type files maintained? What special computer S/W or program used? Manage an office budget? How much? Work with outside vendors? Order supplies? Contact with clients? How many per day? What type service did you provide for them? OK… Now, let’s find theachievementsin some actual résumés… www.iworkministry.org

  18. Finding yourachievementsamongexperiences(Asking yourself the right questions can make the difference!) Original résumé experience Identified & quantified achievements Responsible for marketing to corporate groups for special events. (Events Coordinator – Busch Gardens) Booked 7 corporate special events of over $170,000 each; through satisfied client referrals, booked an additional 12 events for $2.1 million over the next year. Reduced the over 90-day Accounts Receivable during the first year of operation.(A/P A/R bookkeeper) Reduced over 90 day A/R exposure from double-digit 11% ($162,000) to less than 1% ($15,500) within the first year, without a single customer complaint!

  19. Performed clerical duties for an attorney’s office.(Legal Firm) Provided administrative support for an office of eight attorneys.   32. Remember this key to success when putting your résumé together: “Always put your professional strengths (achievements) up front! This shows very quickly that you’re the one for the job, and it shows respect for the reader(s) in thatthey can easily see what you can do for them! ”

  33. Before we close, let’s take a quick smart break……so we don’t trip over thesewriting traps! Don’t rely on spell check alone!It won’t catch homonyms, such as“to”, “too”, and “two”which are spelled correctly, but often misused. Make sure your verbs agree with your nouns,such as “She runs, not “She run”. Also, keeppast jobsinpast tense…common error! Punctuate!Run-on sentences in search of capitals and periods are hard to understand.(Shows a complete lack of attention to detail) Avoid technical “jargon”.Technical terms are fine, but tech jargon often isn’t commonly understood. Let someone who doesn't know what you do read your résumé and see if it’s clear to them. Edit yourself!Clarity & conciseness win out over verbosity. Not everyone has time to read a 3-sentence statement just to get a 1-sentence fact! Wait a day, if you can,before Emailing your résumé. This allows you a fresh look for any of the errors above. This might also apply to a tailored hard copy résumé you’ve done for a specific job.
