Sharing Our Stories • Why stories? • Understanding before intervention • Norms of Collaboration • Attitudes of humility, reconciliation, and openness, seeking accurate understanding of each others experiences. • Considerations
Activity Overview • Select someone from your table that is diverse from you in some way: Race/Ethnicity, faith tradition, gender. • Guidelines: The first person talks for 4 uninterrupted minutes, for 1 minute the listener reflects back what they learned/heard, for 1 minute other clarifies any misunderstandings, then switch. • Feel free to take a moment to organize your thoughts before you begin. • Listen to each other using the following questions as a guide.
Guiding Questions for Dyads • What is your ethnic/racial background and your faith tradition? • What is it like to be you and what has your experience been like as a person with your background (in terms of race, gender, faith tradition)? • What are the advantages you associate with being you? • What are the challenges or disadvantages you associate with being you? • What has your experience been like at APU (in terms of your race, gender, or faith tradition)? ***You only have 4 minutes to reflect on all these questions***
Table Reflection 1. What impacted you the most about the story that you heard? 2. How can this knowledge be used to build unity and respect among faculty on campus?
