Part 1 “Teachings” • This part is divided into 4 sections: Creation, Salvation History, Revelation, and Apostles Creed • The vocabulary for each section is introduced before reading the section • After reviewing the vocabulary, listen to and read the assigned pages • Answer the questions after the reading • Proceed with the next section • Repeat until all 4 sessions are complete • Participate in the online discussion
Creation Vocabulary • ORIGINAL SIN • The sin of Adam and Eve that we all are born with • It is the cause of all suffering • It causes us to be drawn to sin • It is removed through baptism • SANCTIFYING GRACE • An undeserved gift of salvation (saving) from God • A gift of God’s life within us • Received at Baptism • Promised to Adam and Eve even before they were punished for their sin
Read Part 1 “Teachings” Section I “Creation” Pages 2-3 I have an audio recording on the pages, along with some further explanations on Evernote. I am Emailing them to you. When you get to this part of each section, you need to open the audio attachment.
Lesson 1, Section 1“Creation” Questions • Answer these questions in complete sentences. Salvation History Vocabulary • Salvation • Saving something/someone • Related to redemption (making a change in order to be saved) • Achieved by Jesus • Patriarch • Father leader of the Hebrew people • Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel) • Ten Commandments • 10 Moral Laws God gave to the people through Moses • Basic for the Old Covenant • Covenant • Solemn promise or agreement between God and His people

Lesson 1, Section 2“Salvation History” Questions • Who were the 3 Patriarchs? • The 12 Tribes of Israel were named after whom? • Tell me about 3 important things Moses did for God. • Prophets didn’t predict the future like some people think. What did they do for God?
Revelation Vocabulary • Revelation • All God has shared with us about Himself and His will for us • Sacred Scripture • God’s revelation through the inspired writings • Sacred Tradition • God’s revelation handed down through the way we do things, and oral teaching. Scripture came from Tradition • Old Testament • God’s revelation to His Chosen People, the Israelites • New Testament • God’s Revelation through Jesus Christ and His Church • Gospels • Revelation through telling of Jesus’ actions and words

Apostles’ Creed Vocabulary • Holy (Blessed) Trinity • There is one God in three divine persons • Incarnation • The mystery of God becoming Man • “Jesus” • The name means “God Saves” • “Christ” • The title means the “Anointed one” it is from the Greek word meaning the same as the Hebrew term Messiah • Passion • Suffering, Jesus’ scourging, being made fun of, carrying his cross • Resurrection • Rising from the dead • Ascension • Jesus going into heaven by his own power, 40 days after Easter • Pentecost • The Holy Spirit coming down to the believers, the beginning of the Church • Pope • Visible head of the worldwide Church, he is also the bishop of Rome • Jesus’ head steward • The successor to Peter
Creed Vocabulary Continued • Particular Judgment • Jesus judging a person’s life at the time of their death • General Judgment • Final judgment at eh end of time • Our life (sins and good we did) will be revealed to all souls • Purgatory • Place of purification of venial sin and attachment to sin • Communion of Saints • Believers in heaven, in Purgatory, and struggling on Earth • Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy • 14 ways we help each other physically and spiritually • Immaculate Conception • Mary, conceived without sin • Holy Day of Obligation celebrated on Dec. 8 • Actual Sin • Sins we actually commit by our actions, thoughts or what we fail to do • Mortal Sin • Sin that is serious and we choose to do it • Kills our relationship with God • Venial Sin • Sin that weakens our relationship with God • Makes sinning again easier to do

Lesson 1, Section 4“Apostles’ Creed” Questions • What does it mean that God is a Trinity? • In your own words, what does incarnation mean? • Why do we call the Second Person of God “Jesus Christ”? • The Paschal Mystery, celebrated at every Mass, recalls 4 parts of Jesus’ life. What are they? (Hint: P, D, R, A) • What do we call Jesus’ Body, made up of the Communion of Saints? • What will determine where we will spend eternity?
