Requirementsfor Practice/ Competition Practice: • Enrolled in full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree. Competition: • Enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester or quarter hours, regardless of institution’s definition of full-time enrollment. NCAA Division I Bylaws 14.1.8.1 and 14.1.8.2
Eligibility for Competition - Exceptions Final semester/quarter. • Enrolled in courses necessary to complete degree requirements. Competition while enrolled in graduate program. • Enrolled in a full-time graduate program as defined by institution. Cooperative educational work experience. • Required: May participate if offered by the institution and is considered full time. • Not Required: Must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours, which may include the credit value of the co-op program at the certifying institution during the same term. Bylaws 14.1.8.2.1.3 , 14.1.8.2.1.4 and 14.1.8.2.5
Good Academic Standing • Determined by the institution for all students. • August 9, 1995 interpretation: Definition of good academic standing applied to student-athletes shall be a standard at least as demanding as the minimum standard applied to all students in order to participate in extracurricular activities at that institution. Bylaws 14.01.2 and 14.01.2.1
Progress Toward Degree • Designed to move SA toward graduation within five years of full-time collegiate enrollment. • Ensures SA is functioning as student during each academic year. • Exceptions and waivers are available. Bylaw 14.4.3
Progress Toward Degree Academic year credit-hour requirements. • Six-hour requirement each term. • 18-/27-hour requirement each academic year. Progress-toward-graduation benchmarks. • 24-/36-hour requirement. • Percentage-of-degree requirements (40%/60%/80%). • GPA requirements (90%/95%/100%).
Six-HourRequirement • Must complete a minimum of six-semester or six-quarter hours of academic credit in the previous full time regular academic term. • Does not apply to part-time terms. Bylaws 14.4.3.1–(c)
18-Hour/27-Hour Requirement • Must earn 18-semester or 27-quarter hours of academic credit during each regular academic year. • Cannot use summer hours to meet 18/27. • Intercession or “J” term hours during the academic year do count. • Certified before start of the institution's third semester or fourth quarter following the SA's initial full-time enrollment. Bylaw 14.4.3.1-(b)
24-/36-Hour Requirement • Must complete 24-semester or 36-quarter hours of academic credit before the start of the SA’s second year of collegiate enrollment. • Credits can be applicable to any degree. • Credits from summer prior to and summer after first year of collegiate enrollment may be included. • Credit-hour requirement is basis for percentage. Bylaw 14.4.3.1-(a)
Remedial Courses • Restricted to counting six hours of remedial credits toward the credit hour requirements. • Only count toward the six-, 18- and 24-hour requirements if completed during the first academic year of enrollment. • Generally, these courses are not applicable toward the baccalaureate degree and would not be included in percentage-of-degree calculations. • If SA is required to take more than six hours of these types of courses, they may not be included in counting toward the credit hour requirements. • Bylaw 14.4.3.4.4
Degree Credit • Must designate degree program by beginning of third year of collegiate enrollment (fifth semester or seventh quarter). • At the start of the third year of enrollment, all credits used to satisfy progress-toward-degree credit hour requirements (i.e., six-hour rule, 18/27) must count toward designated degree. Bylaw 14.4.3.1.6
Transfer Student-Athletes • One semester = six hours of academic credit. • One academic year = 24/36 hours of academic credit. • Three semesters/four quarters = 30/42 hours of academic credit. • Four semesters/six quarters = six hours. • International transfers do not need to meet six-hour requirement. • Other progress-toward-degree and transfer legislation applies. Bylaws 14.4.3.1.2 and 14.4.3.1.2.1
Case Study – Joe Callaway Callaway is a men’s golf SA. He initially enrolled fall 2009. Is Callaway meeting credit-hour requirements for fall 2010?
Case Study - Callaway • 24-/36-hour requirement: • No, Callaway earned 19 hours. • 18-/27-hour requirement: • No, Callaway earned 13 hours. • Six-hour requirement: • No, Callaway earned 3 hours in the 2010 spring term.
Progress Toward Graduation • 24-/36-hour requirement. • Must complete the following percentage-of-degree requirements: • Before start of third year - 40%. • Before start of fourth year - 60%. • Before start of fifth year - 80%. • Based on SA’s full-time terms of enrollment. Bylaw 14.4.3.2

Grade-Point-Average Requirements • Must meet GPA benchmarks before the start of each regular academic term. • Before the start of second year - 90%. • Before the start of third year - 95%. • Start of fourth year and beyond - 100%. • GPA requirement based on minimum GPA required for graduation. • Transfer students. • Applicable for two-year and four-year transfers who have completed an academic term in residence at the certifying institution. Bylaw 14.4.3.3 and 14.4.3.3.1
Baseball Eligibility • Must meet all progress-toward-degree benchmarks at the beginning of the institution’s fall term. • Not eligible for the remainder of the academic year. • No opportunity to “get well.” • Effective August 2008. • Bylaws 14.4.3.1.3.1, 14.4.3.2.3.1 and 14.4.3.3.2.1
Case Study – Callaway Can Callaway become eligible (“get well”) for the spring 2011 term if Callaway passes 15 hours fall 2010? • Six-hour requirement: Yes, passed 15 hours. • 18/27-hour requirement: Yes, 3 hours +15 hours = 18 hours. • 24/36-hour requirement: Yes, 3+6+15 = 24 hours. Can a baseball SA become eligible after fall 2010 term? • No, baseball SAs must meet progress-toward-degree requirements at the beginning of the institution’s fall term.
Case Study – Sarah Wilson • Wilson is a women’s basketball SA. • She is pursuing a degree in biology that requires 120 hours.

Progress-Toward-Degree Waivers • AMA Online. • Online waiver portal to file all NCAA Academic and Membership Affairs waivers. • Launched February 2011. • ALL waivers must be filed via online portal.
Key Elements For Submitting Progress-Toward-Degree Waivers • Complete waiver application via AMA Online: • Next date of competition. • Deficiency explained. • Completed chart. • Explanation and documentation of mitigation. • Signatures.
AMA Online • Should include: • Six remedial credits in first year. • Credit toward any degree in first two years. • Include all credits: • Failed classes. • Repeated classes. • Withdraws. • Incompletes. • Should include: • Only credits that go toward the SA’s designated degree. • If the chosen degree is known fill out this column, even if the SA is in his or her first two years.
Key Elements for Submitting a Progress-Toward-Degree Waiver • Official transcripts: • Must include all institutions attended. • Full and part time. • Must be OFFICIAL. • SA academic-recovery plan: • Remaining credits must add up. • Must be signed by SA and the academic authority. • Documented mitigation.
Key Elements for Submitting a Progress-Toward-Degree Waiver • SA academic-recovery plan: • Purpose. • Demonstrate how deficiencies will be corrected. • Demonstrate the ability to graduate within five years. • Key points. • Plan should include individual efforts, course scheduling and academic resources that SA is expected to use. • Should consider past academic record to ensure a realistic plan.
Key Elements for Submitting a Progress-Toward-Degree Waiver • SAs with education-impacting disabilities: • Items to include in the waiver. • A history of waivers for and accommodations used by the SA. • Most recent medical documentation, including: • Evaluation and diagnosis. • Academic-recovery plans. • Must include the use of any offered accommodations .
Key Elements for Submitting a Progress-Toward-Degree Waiver • Misadvisement. • Written statements of explanation. • Individual responsible for the misadvisement. • SA. • Institution. • Documentation demonstrating the misadvice. • Institutional-recovery plan. • NCAA Division I Academic Cabinet Update. • Documented misadvisement - NCAA will send letter to president explaining that relief was provided due to misinformation or misadvisement. • Consistent with other waiver team policies.
