  4. Lucknow Chikankari Poetry on Fabric BYRASHMIGOPALRAO Typicalpatternsandprocess Origins The theories associated with the origin of this craft are varied.  While some believe that this art existed since the times of Chandragupta Maurya others believe that it is originally from Persia.  The latter theory propounds that it was patronized and made popular by the Mughals and then by the nawabs of Lucknow.  Irrespective of the theories of its origin, this exclusive art that started as a kind of “white on white” embroidery is going strong centuries later given its beauty and demand. Delicate, hand-made and totally exquisite, these are some of the words that best describe the classic art of Lucknow chikankari. The craft that dates back as early as the 3rd century BC, is a popular symbol of the “city of Tehzeeb” aka Lucknow.  Derived from the word ‘Chikan’, which literally translates into embroidery, Lucknow chikankari is the name given to the delicate maze of thread work executed on fabrics as varied as cotton chiffon, muslin and georgettes.  Given that it is native to Lucknow and its nearby villages, the craft was accorded with a GI status in December 2008. 5. Typicalpatternsandprocess Given the strong Persian influence, flowers are the most popular motifs in Chikankari designs. Paisley patterns and detailing including leaves, stems and vines are some of the most common inspirations for Lucknow chikan designs.  While muslin and mulmul were the most popular fabrics on which Chikan work was done during the 18th century, a wide array of underlying fabrics including cotton, voile, kota, organza, silk, chiffon and georgette are used today.  They are bought in bulk from various sources like cloth mills from Surat, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and parts of Gujarat. Once the basic cloth is washed and dyed, the design is printed using wooden blocks. Most of the blocks are printed using the indigo dye and once the design is embossed, it is sent for embroidery.  This is the most difficult and time-consuming part of process and most of the work is sent in bulk to the nearby villages.  It is usually the womenfolk who do this work during the little free time they have after completing their household chores.  Once done, the fabric is washed and ready for packaging. Paisley patterns and detailing including leaves, stems and vines are some of the most common inspirations for Lucknow chikan designs. Ornateandelaboratecraft One of the most complex forms of embroidery, Lucknow chikan has a whopping 36 different types of stitches!  The final look depends on the kind of stitch, thickness of the thread and the material of the underlying fabric.  Threads from well-known companies like Anchor are used for the purpose of embroidery.  ‘Bakhiya’, also known as shadow work is one of the popular stitches which involves doing the embroidery on the reverse so that only its ‘shadow’ appears on the correct side of the fabric. ' S P U N K YI N D I A N | 0 2

  6. Ulti bakhiya’, ‘Keel kangan’, ‘Zanzeera’, ‘Ghas ki patti’ and ‘Darzdari’ are some of the other commonly used stitching techniques.  ‘Murri’, which is the oldest kind of stitch is one of the most complex and is mainly used in filling up the centre of ‘flower motifs’. ‘Murri’, which is the oldest kind of stitch is one of the most complex and is mainly used in filling up the centre of ‘flower motifs’ In keeping with the modern trends, the beauty of chikankari is enhanced using allied crafts like mirror work, other embellishments and Mukesh work.  The latter also known as Mukeish is yet another complicated and dying craft that involves using thin metallic threads to form patterns to beautify the overall fabric.  Confined to a small community who are skilled in this craft, threads of gold and silver were used during the yesteryears in Mukesh work. All in all, Lucknow chikankari is a craft that is highly time consuming and a complex one to master.  The learning period can stretch up to as long as 20 years before one becomes an expert in the different stitching techniques. 7. Challenges Like all native handicrafts, there are several challenges faced by Lucknow chikankari artisans.  Most of them live in poverty and often work long hours to make ends meet implying that they have little or no bargaining power. They could certainly do with higher pay outs for all their skill and talent.  While things have improved after the registration of the “Self Employed Women's Association" aka SEWA in Lucknow, things could still be better.  So, while their craft is the epitome of grace and dignity, the same is sadly not reflected in their own lives. While things have improved after the registration of the “Self Employed Women's Association" aka SEWA in Lucknow, things could still be better.  So, while their craft is the epitome of grace and dignity, the same is sadly not reflected in their own lives. Also, the industry is plagued with issues like imitation and machine embroidered fabric that is faster to produce and sold at a much cheaper rate.  But per experts, a genuine Lucknow chikankari can always be differentiated not only in terms of its elegant look but also durability for they are far more durable than machine made fabrics that tear easily. 9. Cuisine Custodian BYBINDU GOPALRAO He recently made it to the Top 10 promising chefs of India by Economic Times. He has done a TV Show with Celebrity Chef, David Rocco for Travel and Living Channel. He has been credited for his part in the Hollywood movie ‘Viceroy’s House’, where he set up the entire kitchen from the 1947 and also played a small role of the chef. He has showcased his art at the Jaipur Literature Fair on several occasions. Well we are talking of one person, say hello to the industry veteran Chef Akshraj Jodha. PastPerfect Growing up in a boarding school at Ajmer Military School, Akshraj as a child was into art and sketches. “While in school, I was always keen in joining the army but fate had something else for me. And I am content as I chose Hotel Management as my course of education.” Chef Akshraj Jodha’s forefather, Rao Jodha was the founder of Jodhpur and coming from a Rajput family full of factual stories, he was always interested in history and adventurous stories of his forefathers about wars and shikars (game hunting). 10. I remember my mother used to cook different meat recipes. In my family, she is known for being the best in preparing non vegetarian dishes. When one stays in a village, they see a lot of food been made at home including the pre-preparation. Making of papad, moong dal wadi and the like where our help used to grind the ingredients on stone grinder, mix them with spices and yoghurt and dry them in heat. Having been in the industry for 18 years he started his career with ITC Hotels as a kitchen executive trainee. He started his career with ITC Maurya as a trainee chef at the acclaimed Dum Pukht restaurant post which he was assigned to open Dum Pukht at ITC Sonar in Kolkata. AkherajDeoliaCuisine Akheraj Deolia lies between the borders of Marwar and Mewar hence the cuisine has been influenced by both the regions which includes use of makki, bajra, jo, chana, moong etc. Few of the signature dishes in this cuisine include Pithod Methi Dana, Ker Sangri, Hara tamater laungi, Makka Kheech, Akkha Khargosh and Achari bater. The other influences were the different marriage alliances which changed the repertoire of the food cooked in the royal houses. “For instance, my grandmother was from Gujarat therefore some of the food cooked is a little sweet in nature.” Being the 14th descendant of Rao Akheraj who founded Akheraj Deolia he knows he has a responsibility to maintain tradition. “I am a story teller and well versed with my history and so is my family. We still follow the practices of worshipping Devi Annapurna first thing when we reach home. The old ladies working for us from the village follow the instructions as per my mother while cooking traditional food. All the festivals are worshipped with traditional prasad and food for the deity.” S P U N K YI N D I A N | 0 7

  11. With a wave of healthy eating that is taking center stage he admits that the regional food of India has always been healthy with the use of locally sourced ingredients. At villages, the use of cold pressed oil like mustard and sesame in winters is predominant. Most of the houses have cattle so people use desi ghee and milk produced at home. Lots of grains are used in the cuisine specially Millet or Bajra, which is now coined as super food even though at our homes we been cooking them often and from a long time. The food hence is healthy, our lifestyles have changed. Chef also shares an interesting anecdote when he was posted at ITC Rajputana where His Holiness Dalai Lama was to pay a visit. I was given the task to make a menu for him. So as per the instructions, I made an elaborate vegetarian menu for His Holiness. When he arrived, he called for the Chef to discuss his menu. When I took him through the menu and my suggestions, he looked at me and asked me where the chicken dishes were. I was taken aback, he then told me that he consumes non vegetarian food as the monks always go door to door for food and whatever is being offered to them, they consume. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 0 8

  12. Incidentally one of the toughest meals he cooked was at Shangri La, Kuala Lampur where the Sultan of Brunei used to stay for a month during Ramadan. His team used to order all the Indian dishes from the menu every day for him and no one would know what he eventually ate. Cooking for someone without knowing his preferences was a deal breaker for me. His advice to aspiring chefs is to stick to originality and traditions. Cook food from your heart, take advice from your mother as they are undoubtedly the best chefs in the world. Grandma's recipes are never wrong; they are tried and tested so just follow the traditional way of cooking. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 0 9

  13. SIMRANGODHWANI PassionforDance BINDUGOPALRAO Simran Godhwani is a woman who wears many hats. Well the renowned Kathak dancer who quit her cushy IT job to pursue her passion was recently crowned Miss Lady Star Universe - 2018 in Portugal. An accomplished performer and choreographer, she is also the Founder & Creative Director of Krshálá Dance Theatre. Here are excerpts from an exclusive interview. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 1 0

  14. Tellusaboutyourself, growingyearsand Whatattractedyoutodanceandwhen howyouwereasachild? didyoustartlearning? Simran: Born in India and raised in London and Dubai I am a computer science graduate who worked for over four years with an IT major in Bangalore before I left to pursue my passion for Kathak. I decided to quit working because of the monotony of a 9-5 job. Simran: I have been learning dance since I was 5 years old and have been pursuing Kathak professionally under my Gurus Shri Murari Sharan and Pt. Birju Maharaj for the past 15 years. And with both their blessings I have also been sharing this knowledge to students across the world through my institute Krshala Dance Theatre. I started pursuing Kathak with my Guru Shri Murari, a disciple of the legendary Kathak Guru, Pandit Birju Maharaj. My relationship with Kathak started with my love for Krishna, his stories that I relished as a young child and folk tales from his childhood and youth that were carved in the various temples that I visited as a child. Both my Guru Shri Murari and Dada Guru Panditji ensured that I received the best training in this form and till today continue to do so in the Guru-Shishya parampara. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 1 1

In every round we had the opportunity Whydidyouchoosetospecializein to present our culture and the richness Kathak? of our land to a very diverse group of Simran: My love for Krishna, his folk tales and the way Kathak presents a story using the most natural subtle movements and stylized gestures with intense but subtle facial expressions is what drove me to specialize in this form. In Kathak, to depict love that has been unrequited the dancer needs to feel the intensity and bring out the facial expression in a very subtle manner such that one is able to evoke that kind of expression in the viewers heart/mind and it is subtle but intense. judges and audience who appreciated and valued our diversity. When I won, it was the most wonderful feeling in the world because I had worked hard to achieve this goal. And when the crown was placed on my head it was a validation of all the hard work that I had put in. TellusaboutyourschoolKrsháláDance Whichhasbeenyourmostmemorable TheatreinBangalore? performanceandwhy? Simran: Simran: Krshala – that translates to (Kri –  Kriya or Movement; Shaala – Space) is a dance school that is over twelve years old and is going strong where dancers of all age groups undergo training in the classical dance form of Kathak. The students are trained as per the guru- shishya parampara. It is a school run by strong Indian ethos and values, where discipline, dedication and discovering oneself through the art form is given utmost priority. Simran: To be able to perform for Pt. Birju Maharaj’s 70th birthday in his birthplace Handia, Allahabad has been one of my most memorable performances. Dancers from all over the world had come to this little town to take part in his Birthday celebrations and I felt very blessed to be one of the chosen few to perform at this festival. HowdidyouprepareforMissLadyStar Universe - 2018? Where the capability and dedication shown by the student is the only sure shot way to pave their progress in pursuing this dance form. My first batch of students is ready for their Rang Manch (equivalent of Arangetram) and that is a very proud feeling. Simran: Six months of intense training in various aspects like grooming, fitness, communication and confidence building, putting together the right wardrobe for various events from some of the best industry experts helped me prepare for Miss Lady Star Universe. Whatkindofworkdoyoudothrough Didyouexpecttowin? Howwasyour Samam – CenterforMovementandDance experienceatthepageant? yourNGO? Simran: I worked hard for six months before the pageant. I always went with the thought that I should give it my best shot.  All contestants were  very good and accomplished in their own right. And when I went there and met all of them, honestly I felt I do not stand a chance. By taking part in this pageant, I had the honour to represent my country and opportunity to meet people from all countries and understand the importance of embracing one’s heritage and celebrating what makes us unique. Simran: The NGO wing of Sámám is dedicated to providing cultural education to children from less privileged backgrounds, with a view to enabling them, in time, to earn a living as performing dancers and teachers. We teach and certify these children in a very professional and structured manner in performing arts and help them find employment with various institutions that look out for specialized teachers in these areas. We also use it as therapy for children who have gone through various abuses. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 1 2

  16. I worked hard for six months before the pageant. By taking part in this pageant, I had the honour to represent my country and opportunity to meet people from all countries and understand the importance of embracing one’s heritage and celebrating what makes us unique. Whatisyouradviceto aspiringdancers? Simran: Any classical dance form requires one to be disciplined and hardworking. Indian Classical dances like Kathak, Bharatnatyam and Odissi also teaches us a lot about our culture, heritage and traditions that is slowly getting lost in the garb of modernism. Being an Indian with such diverse cultures is our strong point, I hope this generation continues to pursue these art forms in its pure form and embrace it wholeheartedly and take part in spreading it around the world. Whatareyourfutureplans? Simran: One of my plans is to understand as to how I can leverage digital technology to reach out to students who would love to learn Kathak from various parts of the world. Right now mostly I use Skype, but I feel it is very restricted and does not work well for groups. I am looking for innovators in the digital technology space who can provide me with a more reliable solution. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 1 3

  18. Photography is playing a major role in letting people record their candid moments in numerous ways. Specifically, in the context of wedding photography, digital cameras and vision for technology enabled photography setup have brought a revolution in this stream. Budding photographers are becoming cyber-savvy and using the high-end technology for shooting weddings or any other candid moments. However, there are certain limitations which can only be done away with if industry-wise knowledge is understood. This is where wedding photographers are filling the gap to redefine moments. Subodh Bajpai Photography, a Lucknow based venture is one such example. Excerpts from the interview: WhatinspiredyoutobeaphotographerandWhy? Subodh: I developed a keen interest for photography when I was in 10th standard. I used to click wonderful, candid and impressive pictures. I was often appreciated by my friends and near & dear ones for my photography skills. I practiced clicking images and shooting videos, thereafter and decided to pursue it as a career. From the very beginning, I wanted to mend the loopholes which modern photographers are struggling with. With this vision, I analyzed photography which was being addressed for personal and professional aspects. The credit goes to my team and not just me. We have always turned wedding moments into vivid replica of the event by maintaining high-resolution photos and videos. We feel proud when our work gets recognised by Govt. of India Whydidyouchooseweddingphotography, particularly? Doyouundertakeother photographyservicesaswell? Subodh: The need to connect with masses is what we appreciate before executing a photography project. Weddings include an elaborate gala of ceremonies where smiling faces can be found. Besides, lots of emotions, drama and a complete new genre of photography are the elements which we can relate with. As a wedding photographer, I have captured candid moments in weddings while retaining precision in images and videos. With such a great scope to explore world of emotions, I find this stream suitable for me. Subodh Bajpai Photography has retained colors, emotions and happiness in its work by redefining it innovatively. We have always focused on wedding and related shoots as the genre has become our forte. We also cover pre-wedding ceremonies apart from wedding photography. Howdoyoufeelwhenyou/ yourventurewereawardedbytheGovt. of India? Subodh: Awards have always been a gesture to appreciate hard-work of a person or group. In our case, I associate myself with the team of passionate photographers and post-photography editing team. The credit goes to my team and not just me. We have always turned wedding moments into vivid replica of the event by maintaining high-resolution photos and videos. We feel proud when our work gets recognised by Govt. of India. There are many awards which Subodh Bajpai Photography has been bestowed with, but, the constant knack of innovation is still persistent. All the awards motivate and appreciate us to perform even better. We are looking forward to receive more recognition and love from users/customers. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 1 5

  19. HowistechnologyhelpingPhotography Industry? Whatareyour thoughtsor reflectiononthisaspect? Subodh: In this world of digital work-sphere, the consistent transitions in photography have empowered photographers. Technology has played a vital role in binding various aspects while eliminating accessories of cameras. Every manual camera has to be accompanied with lens, ISO, tripod and other basic tools/accessories to attain the best wedding photography. This has been entirely changed with the emergence of technology enabled photography services. In fact, technology has drastically changed the perception of photographers. We are really thankful to technological innovation for contributing to the success of operations. We get a very good response to our posts when pictures or videos of Subodh Bajpai Photography are uploaded on social media platforms. For instance, if we post 10 photographs on Instagram, over 6 out of them get 1000 likes on them. For instance, two years ago, DSLR cameras created a buzz in the market due to their significance. At present, tech-savvy cameras, mobile cameras and other similar devices are improving the final outcome of wedding photography. Isthereanyroleofmarketingandadvertisinginphotography  Industry? Howwouldyouaddressmarketingofweddingphotographyatthislevel? Subodh: Primary thing is to click images and marketing is like icing on cake. I would rather like to add marketing as the major source of spreading a word about our services. Physical marketing and advertising are not something we are presently relying on. In this age of digital photography, we believe in reaching out to the masses in a lucrative and innovative manner. Social Media has been our major marketing platform to drive traffic. We get a very good response to our posts when pictures or videos of Subodh Bajpai Photography are uploaded on social media platforms. For instance, if we post 10 photographs on Instagram, over 6 out of them get 1000 likes on them. We have been witnessing successful conversion with the help of digital marketing. We use social media to grab the attention of prospective customers, users and visitors of website. WouldyouliketohighlightthetrendsinPhotographyindustry? One particular trend of photography is candid. People want to tell a story through a single picture. This is quite unrealistic thought which needs a wedding photographer to intervene. We weave a story by capturing wedding moments which are full of emotions. These emotions have been recorded through candid photo sessions by our team. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 1 6

  20. Besides, you have to be technically sound, intelligent enough to understand photography. 360 ° photography is also an upcoming trend which people are able to relate with. In this type of photography all the sides of background are covered to offer the fabulous quality of picture or video. This is already being practiced in the West and in the next few years, India will also witness its growth in photography sector. The next step was to build a team, wherein, several hindrances were experienced. It was a challenging task to build a team involving like-minded professionals. In addition, lots of research (R&D) was done by my team to find the business prospects, acquiring projects and sending out a brand message. Word of mouth was the first marketing tool. Over three months, I struggled to find a good job and used to attend carnivals to exhibit my talent. AI enabled cameras are in vision, but, we are planning to appoint 2 engineers from US to work on this model. highlightserviceswhichyougota goodresponsefor? Pleaseshareavaluable pieceofadviceforthe youngphotography aspirants. Subodh: Buying the camera should not be the first thing, people should understand the dynamics of the industry and learn to develop an understanding for the same. The best part of today’s photography is huge and 10 years’ down the line, the future of photography seems to be phone cameras. Lightning system and ISO range are altogether managed easily. With digital camera, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity options are making the work of photographers easier as well as efficient. Aspiring photographers can experience a very bright future in this industry if they utilize technology and basic knowledge of photography tactfully. 26. Theatre: A PowerfulToolfor Communication andReflection BYPRIYANKABANERJEE, FOUNDEROFLEOGIRL PRODUCTIONS. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 2 5 S P U N K YI N D I A N | 2 3

  27. For centuries, generations across the world have cultivated storytelling at the core of their moral fabric. Be it through mythology or legends, fairy tales or the grapevine at work, stories are fundamental to how human beings connect with and relate to the human condition. They add colour to the drab fixtures of everyday reality and envelope it in a packaging that make it palatable to even the most drab of tastes. Be it a novel, Bollywood film or play, what we essentially enjoy is the act of storytelling. An act that is unifying for both storyteller and listener, an understanding beyond one-on- one communication. It is the intuitive trust that we place in the telling of a story, that makes it the most effective medium to place messages, morals and any fodder for reflection. Originating in Ancient Greece, Theatre was the oldest and most primal form of experiential storytelling. At first used as a mere spectacle, artists soon discovered its potential to mirror society and inspire thought about everyday existence. Theatre Master Peter Brook once famously said, “A man walks across an empty space, whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged”. Brook’s definition, while deceivingly simplistic, highlights that Theatre is at its core, about the act of watching and being watched; the audience and the artist. The two-way communication between a thinking audience and performing artist is the purest for its implicit trust. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 2 4

  28. The artist must (whilst believing it himself) create an unreal emotional world for the audience who (knowing fully well it is unreal) engage in it with real, lifelike emotions. Why is it that we laugh or cry whilst watching movies? We know fully well the farcical elements of actors, characters, costumes, make-up and script that are building this emotional world for us. We even know the actor’s real name, family and marital status! Nevertheless, it is due to our implicit trust in the storyteller and association of the storytelling with our own reality that we readily, subconsciously forgive that the emotional world being created for us is in fact, unreal. Is this pure artistic form of communication then, not a wonderful medium to place messages for thought and reflection? That was our discovery at Leogirl Productions.   In the past decade, the business world has evolved at a rapid rate with interventions of technology and social messaging becoming central to the everyday work environment. As Diversity and Inclusion move higher up in the ranks as an organisational priority, it is becoming essential to revamp learning and messaging. Gone are the days of the 8-hour classroom; attention spans are on the decline as the demand for innovative content is on the rise. For decades, the arts and business have been at odds with each other as two exclusive parallels do not meet basis the assumption that there is little business has to do with the arts and vice versa. In recent times, however, we have come to unearth a glaringly obvious common ground: human beings and the emotions that drive them. ‘Edutainment’, the new-age hybrid of Education and Entertainment, is the meeting of the two ideologies resulting in rewarding, power-packed sessions of learning and reflection within Corporate India today. While entertainment may comprise of several art forms, Leogirl Productions began with Theatre in focus and were pioneers in introducing Theatre for Learning and Reflection to Corporates. Organisations such as Reliance Industries, Citibank, Nomura, Paypal, Deloitte, Dell, and so on, have embraced the format to appeal to the humane, emotional intelligence of their Mid-Senior level employees. The format has so far, been used mainly to address the difficult themes of Diversity and Inclusion be it Women Leadership, Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Generational Diversity, Unconscious Biases or even the increasingly relevant, LGBTQ Sensitisation in the workplace. The plays are set in social contexts with relatable characters, situations followed by curated discussions that are realistic and balanced so as to inspire relation and association from the employees watching in the audience. 30. Entertainment allows us to relax our defences, let down our guards and enjoy a story unfold before us with little personal stake. Aristotle recognised this human tendency early on as the “Pleasure of Pity and Fear” i.e, the pleasure, rather relief of seeing a character on stage or screen go through a circumstance that the viewer is far removed from, yet has the cognition to understand. Unlike a training program, where employees are expected to express their personal views and accept the possibility of scrutiny and consequence. In my experience, I have seen Edutainment through Theatre for Learning, allow employee audiences to emotionally, honestly connect with the theme and to actively participate in a dialogue with little fear of consequence since they are after all, only speaking of unreal characters in an unreal play. We may simplify the most complex of internal communications if only we dare to dial back to its core: the human condition of listening to and telling stories. S P U N K YI N D I A N | 2 7
